A memory about Professor Lidia Kuchtówna (1940–2023), a scholar of the Polish art of acting, directing, and stage design, who was affiliated with the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences, for fifty-eight years. The article discusses her most important works in theater history and editorial projects, devoted to Wilam Horzyca, Irena Solska, and Karol Frycz. It describes her approach as combining the biographical and aesthetic perspectives. It emphasizes the methodical and thorough quality and wide range of her library and archive research, which involved numerous research trips. The author also highlights Professor Kuchtówna’s interest in theater iconography.

Lidii Kuchtównie (1940–2023), badaczce polskiej sztuki aktorskiej, reżyserskiej i scenograficznej, która przez pięćdziesiąt osiem lat była związana naukowo z Instytutem Sztuki Polskiej Akademii Nauk. W artykule omówiono jej najważniejsze prace historycznoteatralne i edytorskie poświęcone Wilamowi Horzycy, Irenie Solskiej i Karolowi Fryczowi. Scharakteryzowano jej styl badawczy polegający na łączeniu perspektywy biograficznej z estetyczną. Podkreślono systematyczny i gruntowny charakter oraz szeroki zakres prowadzonych przez nią kwerend i badań źródłowych, związanych z licznymi podróżami naukowymi. Uwypuklono również jej zainteresowanie ikonografią teatralną.

An In Memoriam about Dr Zofia Jasińska (1930–2022), scholar of the history of Polish theatre and editor, who worked at the Theatre Museum in Warsaw as an inventory curator for almost thirty years. The article describes her student years at the Catholic University of Lublin, her work at the Bibliographic Institute of the National Library in Warsaw, her long time collaboration as a theatre reviewer with the Kraków socio-cultural magazine Tygodnik Powszechny, her underground activity during communist rule, and her participation in the amateur theatre movement and in religious associations. It characterizes her most important scholarly and documentary works, thanks to which she is remembered as an outstanding theatre historian and an exemplary editor and documentarian.

Wspomnienie o dr Zofii Jasińskiej (1930–2022), badaczce dziejów teatru polskiego i edytorce, która przez blisko trzydzieści lat pracowała w Muzeum Teatralnym w Warszawie na stanowisku kustosza-inwentaryzatora. W artykule przedstawiono lata jej studiów na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim, pracę w Instytucie Bibliograficznym Biblioteki Narodowej, wieloletnią współpracę recenzentki teatralnej z krakowskim Tygodnikiem Powszechnym, działalność konspiracyjną w latach PRL, uczestnictwo w amatorskim ruchu teatralnym oraz w stowarzyszeniach religijnych. Scharakteryzowano jej najważniejsze prace naukowe i dokumentacyjne, dzięki którym jest pamiętana jako wybitna historyk teatru, wzorowa edytorka i dokumentalistka.

This article presents the role of Mieczyslaw Rulikowski (1881-1951) in the process of shaping and institutionalizing postwar theater studies in Poland. The author highlights the scholar's contributions to the development of book studies and the modernization of bibliography, as well as the significance of his archive and library for the advancement of theater studies. He also discusses his activities for the organization of theater studies, the preservation and consolidation of theater collections, and the establishment of a theater museum and archive. He describes the plans prepared during World War II for an edifice that would include the Theater Institute, the Theater Library and the Museum. Recalls post-war activities related to the attempt to establish the Theater Institute. In the appendix to the article, selected materials from Rulikowski's archive from the Special Collections of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences are published.

Artykuł przedstawia rolę Mieczysława Rulikowskiego (1881–1951) w procesie kształtowania i instytucjonalizacji powojennej teatrologii w Polsce. Autor podkreśla zasługi uczonego dla rozwoju nauki o książce i unowocześnienia bibliografii, a także wagę jego archiwum oraz biblioteki dla rozwoju badań teatrologicznych. Omawia także jego działania na rzecz organizacji nauki o teatrze, ochrony i scalania zbiorów teatralnych oraz utworzenia muzeum i archiwum teatralnego. Opisuje przygotowywane podczas drugiej wojny światowej plany gmachu, który obejmowałby Instytut Teatrologiczny. Bibliotekę Teatralną i Muzeum. Przypomina powojenne działania związane z próbą utworzenia Instytutu Teatrologicznego. W aneksie do artykułu opublikowano wybrane materiały z archiwum Rulikowskiego ze Zbiorów Specjalnych Instytutu Sztuki PAN.

This article is a reminiscence of Józef Marcin Szczublewski, an actor, journalist, editor, museum professional, and lecturer, but most of all, he was a theatre historian and biographer. Theatre scholars often call him “Szczubel”, and he used this nickname himself in his numerous, and often funny, notes. In 1952 he started collaborating with the Theatre Section of the State Institute of Art. He studied archival materials and conducted parallel press archives research with zeal. He published his findings in Pamiętnik Teatralny, and was the quarterly’s Secretary of the Editorial Board in 1962–1964. He soon became, along with Jerzy Got, a renowned biographer of Helena Modrzejewska. Warsaw theatres of the 19th and 20th centuries were a second area of his studies. The Institute of Art awarded Szczublewski his doctoral degree in 1971 based on his dissertation Żywot Osterwy (The Life of Osterwa, published in 1971), completed under the supervision of Prof. Zbigniew Raszewski. The biography had the form of a chronicle that put wide-ranging archival documentation into order. This was the form (and title) that became the author’s favourite. He soon came back to his favourite object of study and heroine to publish Żywot Modrzejewskiej (The Life of Modrzejewska, 1975), and after almost two decades followed it with Żywot Sienkiewicza (The Life of Sienkiewicz, 1989).

Tekst jest wspomnieniem o Józefie Marcinie Szczublewskim, aktorze, dziennikarzu, redaktorze, muzealniku i wykładowcy, ale przede wszystkim historyku teatru i biografie. Badacze teatru często nazywali go "Szczublem", a on sam używał tego przydomka w swoich licznych i często zabawnych zapiskach. W 1952 roku rozpoczął współpracę z Sekcją Teatralną Państwowego Instytutu Sztuki. Z zapałem studiował materiały archiwalne i prowadził równoległe badania archiwów prasowych. Wyniki badań publikował w "Pamiętniku Teatralnym", a w latach 1962–1964 był sekretarzem redakcji kwartalnika. Wkrótce stał się, wraz z Jerzym Gotem, znanym biografem Heleny Modrzejewskiej. Drugim obszarem jego badań były teatry warszawskie XIX i XX wieku. W 1971 roku Instytut Sztuki nadał Szczublewskiemu stopień doktora na podstawie rozprawy Żywot Osterwy, opublikowanej w 1971 roku pod kierunkiem profesora Zbigniewa Raszewskiego. Biografia miała formę kroniki porządkującej obszerną dokumentację archiwalną. Tę właśnie formę i tytuł autor wykorzystywał najchętniej. Do ulubionego przedmiotu badań i bohaterki powrócił wkrótce, publikując Żywot Modrzejewskiej (1975), a po niemal dwóch dekadach – Żywot Sienkiewicza (1989).

A memoir devoted to Jerzy Got (1923–2004), theater historian, documentalist, and editor, initiator of the first program of academic theater studies at Jagiellonian University. The author presents the turns of Got's professional life: his work at the Department of Theater History and Theory of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1956–1967), the organization of the theater department of the Historical Museum of Krakow (1961–1966), his work at Jagiellonian University (1967–1978), and the fruitful period of his independent research after moving to Vienna in 1978. He emphasizes Got's merits for profiling and developing theatrical research at the Jagiellonian University and opening it to international cooperation. He emphasizes the versatility of the scholar-combining a love of documentary and archival research with analytical skills and interpretive talent. He points out the most important areas of Got's interest: the history of the theater of Cracow, the history of the theater of Lviv, theatrical biography (Antonina Hoffmann, Helena Modrzejewska, Bogumił Dawison, Ludwik Solski), as well as the culture of ancient Greece. He also mentions his passion for photography, which was closely related to theater research.

A memoir about Professor Irena Sławińska (1913-2004), a scholar of drama and theater affiliated with the Catholic University of Lublin for several decades. The author presents Sławińska's curriculum vitae and briefly outlines the academic and artistic experiences that shaped her in Vilnius (until 1945), Toruń (1945–1949), Warsaw (1949–1950), and Lublin (1950–2004). She lists the scholar's numerous areas of dramatological and theatrical research, the functions she held in Polish and foreign academic societies and institutions, and discusses her cooperation with foreign universities.
