Pour les historiens polonais, qui pendant les derniers 150 ans tentaient d’écrire un livre biographique sur général Jan Zygmunt Skrzynecki, ses neuf ans de service dans l’armée du Royaume de Belgique a été un défi, dont aucun d’entre eux n’est pas encore réussi a répondre. Partout en Europe, de l’Italie à l’Angleterre et de la France à la Belgique, Skrzynecki jouissait de la réputation du chef militaire héroïque. Une telle opinion s’est formée aussi à cause de la méconnaissance des sources polonaises et des opinions des historiens critiques envers Skrzynecki. Les commentaires négatifs des historiens polonais sur Skrzynecki se sont formées principalement sous l’influence des mémoires du général Ignacy Prądzyński, écrites après l’échec de l’insurrection avec l’aide financière des envahissseurs tsaristes. Dla polskich historyków, którzy w minionych 150 latach podejmowali próby napisania biograficznej książki o generale Janie Zygmuncie Skrzyneckim, jego ośmioletnia służba w armii królestwa Belgii była wyzwaniem, któremu żaden dotychczas nie sprostał. Od Włoch po Anglię i od Francji po Belgię Skrzynecki uchodził za bohaterskiego wodza. Wpływ na taką ocenę miał także brak znajomości źródeł polskich i opinii historyków krytycznie wypowiadających się o Skrzyneckim. Negatywne opinie polskich historyków o Skrzyneckim ukształtowały się przede wszystkim pod wpływem pamiętników generała Ignacego Prądzyńskiego, napisanych po upadku powstania dzięki pomocy finansowej carskiego zaborcy. Król Belgii Leopold I chciał mieć gen. Skrzyneckiego jako głównodowodzącego armią. Opłacił jego ucieczkę z internowania w Pradze przez Londyn do Brukseli. Wiadomość o ucieczce generała Skrzyneckiego z internowania spowodowała gwałtowne poruszenie i zaniepokojenie we dworach i w gabinetach polityków w całej Europie. Po kilku miesiącach pod naciskiem Austrii, Prus, Rosji ale również Anglii, król Leopold ustąpił. Generał Skrzynecki pozostał en disponibilité (w dyspozycji) belgijskiego króla przez następnych osiem lat.
