Adaptation of PBJW and GBJW scales in Latvia that is connected with linguistic and sociocultural features of their use is revealed in the present article. The analysis of questionnaire’s particular indicators and the structure of factors is made. The aim of the research was to analyze the validity, reliability and standardization facilities of BJW questionnaires. To study the belief in a just world (BJW) Dalbert’s questionnaire (1999) “Personal Belief in a Just World” (PBJW (a=0.72)), and Dalbert, Montada, Schmitt’s questionnaire (1987) “General Belief in a Just World” (GBJW (a=0.65)). For the adaptation procedure of GBJW and PBJW surveys questionnaires of 800 participants were selected from 5 various groups: female prisoners (n=166); male prisoners (n=201); males not put on trial (n=226); English philology students of Daugavpils University (n=98); random law-obedient male and female sample (n=103). Cranach’s Alpha criterion results range from 0.67 to 0.832 that indicates quite high consistence of separate questions of the questionnaire. Two-factor structure verifies the results of the previous researches and suggests that it is necessary to distinguish between general and personal belief in a just world for the researches on the just world. In addition, the results revealed that personal belief in a just world is assessed higher than general one. On the basis of the performed test the linguistically adapted version of the questionnaire can be recommended for usage within various social groups, including both law-obedient respondents, and imprisoned respondents.

Studies on justice phenomenon in social psychology have been conducted already more than 60 years and they have multidimensional nature. A great role plays the influence of justice on the formation and development of moral and legal cognition that largely determines individual’s behaviour in the society, its compliance to social norms adapted by the society. Statistical data give evidence about the change for the worse of the criminal situation, as a result of it, increases the number of prisoners. The aim of the present research is to analyze the prisoners’ (n=160, 2010) representations of justice and a just world on the basis of just world hypothesis, as well as to determine the relation between belief in a just world and the perception of court justice, prison justice and personal action justice. During the research several issues were examined: a) whether there is a relation between general and personal belief in a just world and the other parameters of justice; b) what is the level of prisoners’ belief in justice and a just world; c) what are the differences between prisoners’ representations of general and personal belief in a just world, as well as justice of court, prison and personal action. Prisoners’ level of education, criminal experience, subjective satisfaction with life and subjective assessment of belief in justice were analyzed as additional variables.

The paper focuses on mutual relations of the belief in a just world and various life satisfaction aspects. More specifically, the function of the belief in a just world in relation between depressivity and experienced psychosocial stress is explored. Structural model assuming mediational effect of personal and general belief in a just world on relation between depressivity and psychosocial stress was successfully verified. Study sample consisted of 266 15-years-old Czech adolescents (136 girls, 130 boys), participating on international project “ELSPAC” (European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood). Results show partial mediation effect of personal belief in justice and only a marginal mediation effect of general belief in justice.

Výzkumný vzorek zahrnoval 266 patnáctiletých respondentů (136 dívek, 130 chlapců), kteří dlouhodobě participují na mezinárodním longitudinálním výzkumu ELSPAC (European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood).

W artykule zaprezentowano proces adaptacji i właściwości psychometryczne polskiej wersji Skali Wiary w Sprawiedliwy Świat (Belief in a Just World Scale, BJW) opracowanej przez Dalbert. W próbie osób dorosłych rzetelność (alfa Cronbacha) PBJW wyniosła 0,92, a GBJW – 0,84. Potwierdzono dwuczynnikową strukturę skali BJW. Wskaźniki dopasowania modelu przyjęły następujące wartości: RMSEA (0,035; 90% CI: 0,022; 0,048), GFI (0,990), CFI (0,994), TLI (0,992), SRMR (0,055) i χ2/df (1,59).

The article presents the adaptation process and psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Belief in a Just World Scale (BJW) developed by Dalbert. The BJW Scale contains two subscales: Personal Belief in a Just World (PBJW) and General Belief in a Just World (GBJW). The survey was conducted in four samples (N = 579) among students, workers, mothers of disabled children and the adolescent. The convergent and divergent validity was assessed on the basis of the correlation between the PBJW and the GBJW with the scale of rumination about the self and the rumination about the social world (Rumination Questionnaire), the personality traits of the Big Five Model (Ten Item Personality Inventory) and the sense of safety (Safety Experience Questionnaire). The reliability (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient α) of the PBJW was 0.92 and the GBJW was 0.84 in the sample of adults. The two-factor structure of the BJW Scale was confirmed. The parameters of model fit took the next values: RMSEA (0.035; 90% CI: 0.022; 0.048), GFI (0.990), CFI (0.994), TLI (0.992), SRMR (0.055) and χ2/df (1.59). The results indicate that the Polish version of the BJW Scale is valid and reliable and has very good psychometric properties. The study has shown that Polish respondents slightly tend to agree that the world is fair on them (mean of PBJW is 3.77; SD = 0.94), but they slightly disagree that it is fair in general (mean of GBJW is 3.10; SD = 0.95). In order to make appropriate hypotheses about the functional role of BJW for the unit, it was recommended to examine both the PBJW and the GBJW at the same time, as well as the relationship between these forms of BJW.
