Formal–legal Aspects of the Establishment of the Office for State ProtectionA statue on the Office for State Protection (Urząd Ochrony Państwa - UOP) was passed on 6 April 1990 upon a tide of transformations commenced by the Round Table debates held a year earlier. The implementation of this legal act is regarded as the date of the inauguration of shaping the special services of an independent Republic of Poland. The article attempts to describe the transformation of the communist state security organs - the Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - into a state protection service (such as the UOP). The characteristic feature of this process was its considerable dynamics, since in the course of only several months it achieved a formal conversion of the political police, which mainly combated the democratic opposition, into a social service whose domain of activity was totally different from that of its predecessor. The article called for an analysis of a process aiming at the establishment of new special services via a number of key formal–legal documents - the outcome of a sequence of political and organisational events. The sources on which the article is based are composed, first and foremost, of documents in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance, and in particular material describing the transformation of the SB into the UOP and the verification of the functionaries, conducted in the spring of 1990. Supplementary material originates from the archive of the Chancellery of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers and legal acts pertaining to the described problem, i.a. laws, ordinances, and orders.

This article is the first part of a work discussing the functioning of the security service in Starachowice against the Roman Catholic Church during the years 1945-1956. It shows the creation and structure of the District Security Office in Starachowice, along with a brief description of the area in which it functioned. The author also focused on the presentation of executives and employees in the unit mentioned above. Recruitment by the Staracho-wicka secret police and its business operation against the Roman Catholic Church are also described.

Artykuł jest pierwszą częścią pracy omawiającej działania Aparatu Bezpieczeństwa w Starachowicach wobec Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego w latach 1945-1956. Ukazuje on utworzenie i strukturę Powiatowego Urzędu Bezpieczeństwa w Starachowicach wraz z krótką charakterystyką terenu, na którym funkcjonował. Autor skupił się również na prezentacji kadry kierowniczej i zatrudnionych we wspominanej jednostce. W artykule podkreślono rolę tych funkcjonariuszy, którzy zajmowali się zwalczaniem i inwigilacją duchowieństwa oraz ludzi wierzących. Opisano również agenturę zwerbowaną przez starachowicką bezpiekę i jej działalność wymierzoną przeciwko Kościołowi rzymskokatolickiemu.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nad jezuitami w okresie Polski Ludowej. Bezpieka przez cały okres Polski Ludowej starała się ujarzmić jezuitów z północy. Jednak nie odniosła na tym polu wielu sukcesów. W jednej z prac dyplomowych funkcjonariusz Służby Bezpieczeństwa przyznawał się do poniesionej porażki. Zakon jezuitów dzięki swojej specyficznej formacji, duchowości, strukturze i stylowi działania zdołał się obronić zmasowanemu atakowi aparatu bezpieczeństwa.

The article presents the results of research on the Jesuits during the Polish People’s Republic. The security police throughout this period tried to subdue the Jesuits from the North. However the security police did not have much success in this field. In one dissertation, an officer of the Security Service admitted it had suffered defeat. The Jesuits, thanks to their specific formation, spirituality, structure and style of operation, managed to see off the massive attack of the security apparatus.

Przytacza opinie, jakie były wygłaszane przez duchowieństwo polskie w związku z pobytem o. Pedra Arrupe SI w Polsce oraz odnotowuje informacje przekazywane przez donosicieli oraz funkcjonariuszy MSW. Pobyt generała jezuitów nie spotkał się z dobrym przyjęciem wśród polskiego duchowieństwa rzymskokatolickiego.

The article presents the preparations and the course of the visit of the Jesuit general Father Pedro Arrupe SJ to the Polish People’s Republic in the light of documentation by the officers of the communist Ministry of the Interior. The author quotes the opinions expressed by the Polish clergy regarding the presence of Father Pedro Arrupe SJ in Poland and notes the information provided by informers and officers of the Ministry of the Interior. This visit by a Jesuit general was not well received by the Polish Roman Catholic clergy.

Został on ukazany na podstawie różnych materiałów operacyjnych Służby Bezpieczeństwa Ministerstwa Spraw Wewnętrznych Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej. Jezuici warszawscy zaprezentowani zostali jako zdystansowani, sceptyczni i krytyczni do dziejących się wydarzeń, co wynikało z ich negatywnych doświadczeń z przeszłości.

The article presents the attitude of the Warsaw Jesuits, who lived mainly on Rakowiecka Street, to March 1968 in Warsaw. The conclusions are based on various operational materials of the Security Service of the Ministry of the Interior of the Polish People's Republic. The Jesuits of Warsaw are shown to have been distanced, sceptical and critical in their attitude to the events happening. This resulted from their negative experiences from the past.

The article presents various operational cases that the security apparatus brought against the Jesuits from particular outposts of the Greater Poland-Masovia Province of the Jesus Society during the People's Poland. Knowledge in this area was obtained on the basis of many years of research and analysis of documents left by the Security Service in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance. The article lists areas of interest of the security apparatus of the Jesuit order, as well as individual monks. The analysis of the documentation showed that the Ministry of Security wanted to know the whole life of the religious. The majority of the security apparatus was interested in current pastoral work and contacts with various social groups on many levels.

W artykule przedstawiono różnorodne sprawy operacyjne jakie aparat bezpieczeństwa w okresie Polski Ludowej wytoczył przeciwko jezuitom z poszczególnych placówek Prownicji Wielkopolsko-Mazowieckiej Towarzystwa Jezusowego. Wiedzę w tym zakresie uzyskano na podstawie wieloletnich badań i analizy dokumentów pozostawionych przez Służbę Bezpieczeństwa w archiwach Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej. W artykule wymieniono obszary zainteresowania aparatu bezpieczeństwa zakonem jezuitów, jak również poszczególnymi zakonnikami. Z analizy dokumentacji wynikało, że resort bezpieczeństwa chciał poznać całokształt życia zakonnika. W przeważającej aparat bezpieczeństwa mierze interesowała bieżąca praca duszpasterska i kontakty z różnymi grupami społecznymi na wielu płaszczyznach.

Jest to czas: nawiązywania przez jezuitów dialogu z władzą komunistyczną, ujawnienia się konfliktu międzypokoleniowego oraz ostrego sporu z prymasem kardynałem Stefanem Wyszyńskim. W zakonie zostały powołane dwie niejawne grupy, których zadaniem było nawiązanie dialogu z otaczającą rzeczywistością.
