An important document for the history and spirituality of the Franciscan Order is the Canonization Bull of St. Francis of Assisi, issued by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. It depicts the figure of Saint Poverello against the background of numerous biblical figures and images. This paper is a commentary on the text of the Bull, in particular on its biblical feature. Linguistic remarks on the translation are followed by an evaluation of available sources of the text and a statistic of biblical references present in the papal document. The central part of the paper is the presentation of biblical characters, both of the New and Old Testaments, which, according to the intention of the author of the bull, are types referring to the figure of St. Francis: Apostle Paul, Abraham, Jacob, Jephthah, Samson and Shamgar, Noah, Gideon, Moses, David, Job and Simon the High Priest. In this way, St. Francis of Assisi appears as one of the special figures in the history of salvation.

Ważnym dokumentem dla historii i duchowości Zakonu Franciszkańskiego jest bulla kanonizacyjna św. Franciszka z Asyżu, wydana przez papieża Grzegorza IX w 1228 roku. Prezentuje ona postać świętego Biedaczyny na tle licznych figur i obrazów biblijnych. Niniejszy artykuł jest komentarzem do tekstu bulli, w szczególności do jego wybitnie biblijnego charakteru. Po wstępnych uwagach językowych dotyczących tłumaczenia, następuje ocena dostępnych źródeł oraz statystyka biblijnych odniesień obecnych w badanym dokumencie. Centralną częścią artykułu jest prezentacja biblijnych figur, zarówno z Nowego jak i ze Starego Testamentu, które w zamyśle autora bulli stanowią typy odniesione do postaci św. Franciszka: Paweł Apostoł, Abraham, Jakub, Jefte, Samson i Szamgar, Noe, Gedeon, Mojżesz, Dawid, Hiob oraz arcykapłan Szymon. W ten sposób św. Franciszek z Asyżu jawi się jako jedna ze szczególnych postaci w historii zbawienia.

Obecnie w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim aż trzynaście miast spośród czterdziestu dziewięciu w swoim herbie przywołuje świętych, postacie biblijne lub atrybuty i symbole z nimi związane. Wizerunek Matki Bożej widnieje na tarczy herbowej trzech warmińsko-mazurskich miast: Iławy, Fromborka i Pasymia. Jan Chrzciciel patronuje miastu Pisz. W miejskich herbach na terenie Warmii i Mazur swoje miejsce znaleźli także apostołowie: św. Jakub (Olsztyn), święci Piotr i Paweł (Olsztynek, Pieniężno) oraz św. Jan (Zalewo, Kisielice). W omawianym regionie w herbach miast znajdują się nie tylko postacie biblijne, ale również i postacie świętych, tj. św. Katarzyna patronuje miastu Działdowo, św. Rozalia miastu Susz, zaś św. Jerzy identyfikowany jest z miastem Ostróda.

Fourteen cities of the forty-nine evoke currently the saints, biblical figures or symbols and attributes associated with them in their coats of arms in the province of Warmia and Masuria. The image of Our Lady appears on the shield of cities: Iława, Frombork and Pasym. John the Baptist is the patron of Pisz. The apostles find also their place in urban coats of Warmia and Masuria: St. Jacob (Olsztyn), St. Peter and Paul (Olsztynek, Pieniężno) and St. Jan (Zalewo, Kisielice). There are not only biblical figures, but also persons of saints in the coats of the cities, ie. St. Catherine in Działdowo, St. Rozalia in Susz and St. George is identified with the city of Ostróda.
