The point writing system created in the 19th century by Louis Braille made people with visual disabilities actively participate in social, culture and professional life. The aim of the article is an attempt to present the role of point writing and the impact of modern technologies on the lives of people with visual disabilities. An assessment of the popularization and dissemination of the Braille system in the public space was made. The activity of sighted people and selected institutions operating in Upper Silesia was presented and preliminary results of research on the historical Braille book collection collected in the Bibliotherapeutic Department of the Silesian Library in Katowice were presented.

System pisma punktowego stworzony w XIX w. przez Louisa Braille’a sprawił, że osoby z niepełnosprawnością wzroku zaczęły aktywnie uczestniczyć w życiu społecznym, kulturalnym i zawodowym. Celem artykułu jest próba przedstawienia roli pisma punktowego i wpływu nowoczesnych technologii na życie osób z niepełnosprawnością wzroku. Dokonano oceny popularyzacji i upowszechniania systemu Braille’a w przestrzeni publicznej. Zaprezentowano aktywność osób widzących, wybranych instytucji działających na Górnym Śląsku i przedstawiono wstępne wyniki badań nad historycznym księgozbiorem brajlowskim zgromadzonym w Dziale Biblioterapeutycznym Biblioteki Śląskiej w Katowicach.

Among groups in society at risk of digital exclusion are people with visual impairments. Yet new technologies expand access to information for the visually impaired; they reduce or even eliminate their reading disability and introduce the visually impaired to information culture. However, this has to be based on a possibility, enshrined in law, of using various materials in alternative formats and with the help of technology. The present paper, based an analysis of documents and participant observation, examines questions concerning key legal solutions regulating access of people with visual impairments to sources of information, and information and communication technologies, as well as the specifi city of the cognitive process of behaviour of visually impaired users. The author presents alternative formats of library material and supporting technologies, particularly modern (digital) version of the Braille system, tactile graphics and audio description. She also examines the evolution of libraries for the blind. The paper ends with suggestions concerning libraries for visually impaired users and well as proposal of research discourses.
