Ustawa o bibliotekach z 1997 roku określa typy bibliotek, jakie mogą istnieć w Polsce. Obok najpopularniejszych – bibliotek publicznych, wymieniony jest szereg bibliotek specjalistycznych, które swoją działalnością służyć mają określonej grupie użytkowników. Artykuł przedstawia prawne ramy działalności tych bibliotek, a także krótko charakteryzuje funkcje jakie powinny one spełniać.

The 1997 Act on Libraries describes types of libraries that may exist in Poland. In addition to the most popular - public libraries, a number of specialist libraries are mentioned, which serve a specific group of users with their activities. The article presents the legal framework for the activities of these libraries and briefly characterizes the functions they should perform.

Basing on the available sources of information, the article intends to define and distinguish special kinds of libraries in France, and describe their history, organisation and typical activities that they conduct. Additionally, the author focuses on characterizing the libraries’ staff, the services provided and the users.
