The first part of the paper is dedicated to Wincenty Pol’s occasional poems, dedicated to poets and poetry, and on that basis, it is possible to reconstruct the author’s perception of the situation of poets and poetry, as well as their role in society deprived of political identity. The second area of discussion are Pol’s works, which are addressed to scholars and, at the same time, emphasise the significance of their activity for the spiritual condition of the Poles, and indicate the originality of the poet’s (and an active researcher’s) reflections in relation to individual and collective research initiatives.

The article is a review of the book by Maria Makaruk, Antoni Edward Odyniec – romantyk w zwierciadle biedermeieru, which was published in Warsaw in 2012. The book is devoted to the life and works of the poet connected with two literary currents, Romanticism and Biedermeier. This interesting and valuable volume is complemented by an anthology of Odyniec’s works.

The article is a suggestion for a possible interpretation of an identified interference of two currents − Romantic Sarmatism and Biedermeier which marked their presence in the 19th-century Polish culture. The currents provide an example of cultural diffusion which results in redefinition of the cultural identity of Polish gentry of the second half of the 19th century. Based on literary works defined as the circle of heirs of Pamiątki Soplicy [Soplica’s Memoirs] by Henryk Rzewuski, the article portrays not only the evolution of the old-time szlachta (Polish gentry) tradition in the context of ongoing social and cultural changes brought by the 19th century but most of all it extracts the essence and meaning of Biedermeier as a crucial cultural impulse which modernised the tradition of szlachta (Polish gentry) and ushered it into the cultural processes taking place in the 19th-century Europe. This cultural diffusion which is apparent in the relationship between Romantic Sarmatism and Biedermeier makes it possible to outline the geographical borders of cultural phenomena as well as their time frames which are indistinct when looked into only from the perspective of commonly accepted mainstream history of the 19th-century Polish culture. Also, the article pays attention to the social changes which initiated shifts and movements within the Polish culture of the 19th century.

Prezentowany tekst jest propozycją interpretacji dostrzeżonej interferencji dwóch nurtów dziewiętnastowiecznej kultury polskiej: romantycznego sarmatyzmu i biedermeieru jako przykładu dyfuzji kulturowej, której efektem staje się zredefiniowana kulturowa tożsamość polskiego ziemiaństwa drugiej połowy XIX w. Na przykładach dzieł literackich, określonych jako krąg spadkobierców Pamiątek Soplicy Henryka Rzewuskiego, pokazuję nie tylko ewolucję dawnej tradycji szlacheckiej w kontekście zmian społecznych i kulturowych, jakie przynosi XIX w., ale przede wszystkim wydobywam znaczenie biedermeieru jako ważnego impulsu kulturowego, który modernizował tradycję szlachecką i otwierał ją na kulturowe procesy zachodzące w dziewiętnastowiecznej Europie. Kulturowa dyfuzja zachodząca między romantycznym sarmatyzmem a biedermeierem pozwala mi wskazać niezbyt wyraźnie dostrzegane z perspektywy typowych ujęć historii kultury polskiej XIX w. geograficzne granice występowania zjawisk kulturowych oraz czasowe cezury ich trwania, zwracam też uwagę na wydarzenia społeczne, które inicjowały kulturowe przepływy w obrębie kultury polskiej XIX w.

This article summarises the most important research on the figure of Antoni Edward Odyniec conducted so far. Apart from discussing the most important biographical facts, the present sketch makes references to a number of important attitudes and research positions taken towards this man of letters both in the past and at present, including both those full of esteem and reverence and those mercilessly depreciating the nature of his actions and work. An important work illuminating the figure of the author himself are his “Letters from Travel”. Although, most often, these letters are treated as a source of more or less reliable information about Adam Mickiewicz, they tell us just as much about the author. In the re-evaluation of the current perception of both the existential and creative attitudes of Odyniec, a special role is played by references to the Biedermeier context, to which the final parts of the work are devoted. An important work, illuminating the figure of the author himself, will be his Letters from travel. Most often they were treated as a source of more or less reliable information about Adam Mickiewicz. However, the specificity of these epistolary utterances tells us just as much about the author. The reality that re-evaluates the current perception of both the existential and creative attitudes of Odyniec turns out to be the reference to the Biedermeier context, to which the final parts of the work will be devoted.

Niniejszy artykuł ma charakter porządkujący dotychczasowe, najistotniejsze ustalenia badawcze na temat sylwetki Antoniego Edwarda Odyńca. W tworzeniu szkicu do jego portretu (oprócz głównych faktów biograficznych) dużą rolę będzie odgrywać przywoływanie różnorodnych, najważniejszych dawnych i współczesnych postaw oraz stanowisk badawczych, jakie wobec niego zajmowano, zarówno tych pełnych estymy oraz rewerencji, jak i deprecjonujących bezlitośnie charakter jego poczynań i twórczości. Istotnym dziełem doświetlającym postać samego autora będą tutaj jego Listy z podróży. Najczęściej traktowano je jako źródło mniej lub bardziej wiarygodnych informacji o Adamie Mickiewiczu. Jednakże specyfika owych epistolarnych wypowiedzi równie wiele mówi nam o autorze. Rzeczywistością przewartościowującą dotychczasowe postrzeganie zarówno postaw egzystencjalnych, jak i twórczych Odyńca, okazuje się zaś przywołanie kontekstu biedermeieru, czemu będą poświęcone końcowe partie pracy.
