The author of the article presents the character of Elbano Stanislao de Bechi – a hero of the January Uprising and his literary biography authored by Teresa Bojarska. The present author is interested in the biographer’s attitude to historical sources, her method of narrating and the relations between fiction and historical truth. The analysis is focused on Bojarska’s style of describing her characters, the romance thread of the novel as well as the creation of the hero’s fate against the background of the January Uprising.

Autorka artykułu przypomina postać Elbano Stanislao de Bechi – bohatera powstania styczniowego oraz jego literacką biografię autorstwa Teresy Bojarskiej. Interesuje ją stosunek pisarki do źródeł historycznych, sposoby prowadzenia narracji powieściowej, relacje między fikcją a prawdą historyczną. Analizie poddała sposób konstruowania opisu postaci, wątek romansowy powieści oraz kreację losów bohatera na tle dziejów powstania styczniowego.

The article focuses on the artistic elements of Italian High Renaissance and Mannerism in the narrative structure of the biographical novel about Michelangelo Buonarroti, The Agony and the Ecstasy, by Irving Stone. The discussion of the above is limited to one selected aspect of narration, namely a description. The analysis includes ekphrastic passages referring to the most well known, monumental sculptural pieces by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The aim of the article is to establish the extend to which the literary descriptions form the novel by Irving Stone reflect the character and style of the 16th century sculptures of Michelangelo.
