This essay is inspired by a close reading of the recently published volume Żołnierze ludowego Wojska Polskiego. Historie mówione (Soldiers of the Polish people’s Army. Oral histories) by Jarosław Pałka and Kaja Kaźmierska (Łódź, 2018) and continuously refers to it. Rather than a standard book review, it is a critical essay which positions this publication, and the documentation project standing behind it, in the context of Polish oral history research field. The latter has been expanding dynamically in recent years, gaining more and more recognition also among academic historians. One of its essential characteristics, to which this volume attests, is its methodological anchoring in biographical sociology. This field of research has a long academic tradition in Poland (though its current versions tend to adopt ‘Western’ ideas and research patterns) and offers scientific credibility to, still often insecure, oral history research. The text claims that scientific legitimisation of this kind does not necessarily lead to a convincing interpretation. The method, no matter how neutrally it may be presented, is not free from the authors’ value judgements and non-source-based historical knowledge (and imagination). The text, therefore, suggests a reading of the book – which is vastly a selection of edited, historically footnoted and narratively ordered oral history sources (biographical narrative interviews with the title soldiers) – that partly goes against the authors’ interpretations. Altogether, it makes up an exercise in (oral) historical hermeneutics.

Podgórecki’s path of life, abounding in paradoxes and dramatic turning points, remains uncharted. Therefore, this article offers first a brief sketch of Adam Podgórecki’s biography, based on memoirs, original works, official documents and other “personal documents”. Post-war years are analyzed in particular, including student period and participating in the Club of the Logophagoi, a unique, unofficial discussion group. The experience of the communist order in the academia indicates the real price to be paid for those “disobedient in thinking”. The case of Podgórecki reveals the mechanisms of gradual exclusion and, as the result, an exile from the country. Discrete yet powerful role of communist secret service is also recognized. Secondly, the text presents some problems concerning writing a biography of the intellectual. The author explores different sociological approaches to biography. Certain conceptual and methodological constraints and obstacles are emphasized here. Writing a biography is also shown as a social practice which requires facing dilemmas concerning career path of a biographer as well as a challenge to a hierarchy within Polish sociological milieu.

Życie Adama Podgóreckiego, obfitujące w paradoksy i dramatyczne zwroty, pozostaje słabo rozpoznane. Z tego względu artykuł w pierwszej kolejności ukazuje krótki szkic biograficzny polskiego badacza, bazujący na wspomnieniach oraz dokumentach, w tym osobistych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono latom powojennym, w tym okresowi studenckiemu oraz udziałowi Podgóreckiego w Klubie Logofagów, niezwykłej i nieoficjalnej grupie dyskusyjnej. Tekst wskazuje również na cenę, jaką naukowcy „nieposłuszni w myśleniu” musieli płacić w reżimie komunistycznym. W tym kontekście przypadek Podgóreckiego odkrywa mechanizmy stopniowego wykluczania w środowisku naukowym skutkującego w ostateczności przymusową emigracją z kraju. Ważna jest tu także rola, jaką odegrała w życiu Podgóreckiego Służba Bezpieczeństwa. Po drugie, artykuł analizuje różne socjologiczne podejścia do biografii. Podkreślono tam pewne ograniczenia oraz bariery o charakterze koncepcyjnym i metodologicznym. Pisanie biografii ukazane jest również jako praktyka społeczna, uwikłana w rozstrzyganie dylematów kariery naukowej biografa oraz jako wyzwanie dla aktualnej hierarchii w polskim środowisku socjologicznym.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę przemilczeń w narracjach biograficznych funkcjonariuszy aparatu władzy PRL. Stanowi studium strategii unikania opowieści o okresie Polski Ludowej, a jego podstawą jest czternastogodzinny wywiad narracyjny z emerytowanym pułkownikiem Ludowego Wojska Polskiego. Autor proponuje kontinuum strategii unikania, które rozciąga się od prób odpolitycznienia własnego uczestnictwa w systemie, poprzez strategię minimalnych ustępstw, do prób zdjęcia z siebie odpowiedzialności za uczestnictwo w strukturach władzy. Zdaniem autora, może ono stanowić przyczynek do stworzenia modelu – przydatnego narzędzia zwiększającego efektywność badań nad funkcjonariuszami poprzedniego systemu. Kontinuum jest jednocześnie propozycją rozpoczęcia namysłu nad problemem przemilczeń biograficznych, pojawiającym się w badaniach biograficznych nad wspomnianą grupą. Problem ten wydaje się szczególnie istotny ze względu na konsekwentne negowanie okresu PRL w polskim dyskursie publicznym.

The paper undertakes the issue of concealments in the biographical narrative of Polish communist government’s functionaries. It is a study of various strategies of avoiding telling the stories about the period of PRL, based on a fourteen-hour narrative interview with a retired colonel of Polish People’s Army. The author proposes a continuum of these strategies, which extends from the de-politicization of narrator’s participation in the previous system, through the strategy of minimal concessions to taking off responsibility for the participation in the system. Acording to the author, the continuum can be a first step to creating a more complex model that would be a useful tool forto improvinge the efficiency of research on the functionaries of the previous system. The continuum is also aimed at proposinges to start athe reflection on the issue of concealment in such research, which seems to be particularly important in the current situation of the consistent denial of the communist period within the Polish public discourse.

Socjologiczne jakościowe badania biograficzne wyróżnia zainteresowanie przypadkiem. Jednocześnie dąży się w nich – często za pośrednictwem studium przypadku – do zrozumienia lub wyjaśnienia zjawisk ponadindywidualnych, powtarzalnych, do pewnego stopnia ogólnych. W artykule przyglądamy się sposobowi traktowania przypadków w socjologii biograficznej. Przedstawiamy własne doświadczenia empiryczne, polegające na przeprowadzeniu autobiograficznych wywiadów narracyjnych z uczestnikami ogólnopolskiego, panelowego badania surveyowego, którzy zostali do niego przed laty wylosowani. Pokazujemy, jakie konsekwencje – metodologiczne i teoretyczne – może mieć taki, nietypowy dla socjologii biograficznej, sposób doboru przypadków. Zastanawiamy się, czy i do jakiego stopnia doświadczenie „zwykłego człowieka”, everymana, może zostać odzwierciedlone w pracach socjologicznych opartych na metodzie biograficznej.

Sociological, qualitative, biographical research is distinguished by its interest in the case. At the same time, this research seeks-often through case studies-to understand or explain supraindividual, repetitive phenomena which are, to some extent, general. In this article, we look at how cases are treated in biographical sociology. We present our own empirical experience, consisting in autobiographical narrative interviews with participants of a nationwide panel survey, who were randomly drawn to the panel many years ago. We show the possible consequences, both methodological and theoretical, of this way of selecting cases, quite unusual for biographical sociology. We wonder whether and to what extent the experience of the “ordinary person,” the Everyman, can be reflected in sociological works based on the biographical method.
