Based on a dictionary of contemporary Polish surnames, the article collects surnames that are identical as bird names, and includes the number of persons who bear such names. The number is surprisingly high (642 277 persons). The article demonstrates, through examples, how various qualities of birds motivate the metaphorical use of bird names as nicknames, and subsequently as surnames.

The dialectological record of wild bird names is scant. This article presents the Greater Polish material covering wild bird names obtained as part of the field research carried out in the Pobiedzisko commune (Poznań poviat) and completed in 2022. Contemporary names are juxtaposed with the dialectal material collected by Adam Tomaszewski (the 1930s) and the material found in Atlas języka i kultury ludowej Wielkopolski (Atlas of Greater Poland’s regional language and folk culture) (the 1970s and the 1980s) for the same area. The overview of the old and contemporary material allows conclusions on the functiooning of dialectal and general Polish names of wild birds gathered by three generations of Poznań dialectologists and indicaation of the research needs as regards recording names from the thematic field NATURE (not only bird names).

Nazwy ptaków dziko żyjących mają skromną dokumentację dialektologiczną. W artykule zaprezentowano materiały wielkopolskie obejmujące nazwy dzikich ptaków, które pozyskano w badaniach terenowych zakończonych w 2022 r. na terenie gminy Pobiedziska (pow. Poznań). Nazwy współczesne zestawiono z materiałami gwarowymi Adama Tomaszewskiego (l. 30. XX w.) oraz materiałami Atlasu języka i kultury ludowej Wielkopolski (l. 70. i 80. XX w.) dla tego samego obszaru. Ogląd materiałów dawnych i współczesnych pozwala wysnuć wnioski co do sposobu funkcjonowania nazw gwarowych i ogólnopolskich nazw ptaków dziko żyjących zebranych przez trzy pokolenia poznańskich dialektologów oraz wskazać potrzeby badawcze w zakresie dokumentowania nazw z pola tematycznego PRZYRODA (nie tylko nazw ptaków).
