Evidence from research into the “net generation” has shown it is not certain that there is a homogenous group of young people whose abilities to use technology are different from any other age group. With tools like blogs and online research becoming more popular in educational contexts research needs to provide a picture of what kinds of abilities and preferences students have so that appropriate teaching can be provided. This study examines the Japanese context in three areas: 1) Technology ownership, frequency of use, and perceptions of ability; 2) Frequency and type of use of the Internet; 3) Use and perceptions of institution Websites. Students at two universities and one middle and high school (193 male, 197 female, ages 13 to 21) responded and the analysis seems to confirm other studies’ results. They tend to own a lot of Internet-connected technology, especially mobile devices, are familiar with and frequently use the Internet, and perceive themselves competent to do so. However, their use is mostly for entertainment and not for learning or content creation. In conclusion, young people do not seem to be especially proficient at using technology for learning and may need technical or pedagogical support for sophisticated online educational tasks such as research or blogging.

Through an in-depth and detailed analysis of one specific case, this study demonstrated that digital technologies, for example, blogging, wikis and social networking, have a role to play in the development of literacy skills in the primary classroom. The findings from this study suggest, that in this instance blogging was successfully integrated into teaching and learning sequences to achieve numerous English syllabus writing outcomes. This study also demonstrated that, in addition to the development of traditional literacy skills, concerned mainly with the ability to construct “well structured and well presented” (BOS, 2007, p37) texts, the collaborative use of the classroom blog provided students with the means to develop critical literacy skills in relation to interacting with an audience and each other (BOS, 2007).

This article examines aspects of contemporary Slovak environmental activist discourse in the digital realm of blogging and cyberspace. It explores this subject by first comparing volunteer brigades and samizdat writing from the late communist period with present digital forms of environmentalism in the new millennium. Current environmental blogs are then analysed according to material, substantive, and discursive aspects as these suggest obstacles and benefits to promoting environmentalism in the wake of political transformation. In examining this issue in one Central and East European context, the paper aims to raise broader questions regarding both research on environmental behaviour and policy in post-socialist Europe as well as the relationships between culture, political consciousness and technology in an age of globalisation.

Studies of protest cannot but remain relevant and topical: the world is full of protesters and protests. The importance of studies of protests in 20th-cetnury Russia is not only historical but also ethical. Protest in literature chiefly manifests itself in the creation of a work that is not censored. An ideal medium for this kind of literary activity is folklore, samizdat and, nowadays, blogging. In his article, Aleksandr Borisovich Bushev discusses contemporary forms of folklore and the contemporary reception of samizdat literature; he also offers reflections on these, with a special focus on education. Bushev refers to works by samizdat writers and pays special attention to the topic of self-censorship on the example of Soviet writers and their attempts to overcome it through “writing for the drawer” (in the hope for a posthumous publication). Bushev examines also the aesthetic form of artworks exposed to censorship and suppression. The majority of the forms of protest, and the accompanying responses of the authorities, are now of historical importance. Nowadays, literary protest manifests itself differently than in the past: today, the medium is the internet, and blogging is the source of alternative discourse, the discourse of counterculture, and minority discourse.
