Estetyczna natura wspomnienia

The main objective of the paper is to investigate how reflection on the ‘nature of recollection’ may change under the influence of transformations in understanding moder- nity. The analysis covers the esthetic dimension of the recollection process. Recollection has gradually solidified its position: from comprehensive conceptualizations of human temporality to various analyses of time experience, resulting in distinguishing memory as a separate issue, and finally to detailed considerations of its forms. The current trends in research are set, on the one hand, by new historiography and memory studies, and, on the other hand, by reflection on perception and body memory. In either case the esthetic aspect of recollection (memories) can clearly be observed. The esthetic is connected with either the ‘poetic’ (in the creative sense) aspect of the processes of recollection understood as a process of narrative building or aisthetic reconstruction by body memory.

This paper considers how Frances Itani’s Deafening imaginatively rethinks our understanding of the Great War in the age of postmemory. Seeing as the novel is set in Canada and Europe during the First World War and takes as its protagonist a deaf woman, the poetic attention given to the senses as a horizon of phenomenological experience magnifies the moral bonds that the characters establish in defi ance of both deafness and death. Guided by the theoretical reasoning of Marianne Hirsch, Elaine Scarry, and Alison Landsberg as well as contemporary phenomenological thinking, most significantly that of Edward S. Casey, Steven Connor, Michel Serres, and Jean-Luc Nancy, this paper examines how the novel’s attentiveness to the materiality of the body in regard to the ethical collisions of sound and silence as well as life and death contributes to a poetics of resonance that generates prosthetic memories, turning the anonymous record of war into a private experience of moral endurance inscribed on the ear of historical legacy.

Body memory is a relatively new philosophical notion, entangled in interiorization of the past – paradoxically this entanglement liberates the individual from the dictature of the present flow and enables her/his autonomy. The author intends to show that this apparent ensnarement, with all its difficult genesis, makes us responsible, active agents, influencing our environment. To achieve this objective, she chooses to describe the painful of ambiguous process of training and drill of the body, immersing us in social patterns, and thus in the living past. This path leads us – a paradox again – to the arduous and painstaking rediscovery of the issue of subject. There is still hope that we can recuperate this vanishing notion, reinterpreting the most essential classical themes of philosophy, such as time and transcendentality. But the subject matter remains opaque, and requires further reflection.

The purpose of the article is to show the strategies for supporting social communication of older adults by using gestures and paratheatrical forms. In the conducted analyses the authors have used references to research in the field of neuropsychology, psychogeriatrics and a phenomenologically-oriented concept of embodied cognition. In this context, links between that last category and body memory, as well as research into mirror neurons, are shown. Also, the relationship between motion activation, language communication of seniors and stimulating neural circuits responsible for cognitive processes is pointed out. Moreover, attention is paid to the functions of gesture systems, as well as the stages of introducing paratheatrical forms into the processes of supporting language communication competences of seniors. The paper fits into the interdisciplinary reflection on the quality of life in old age in the 21st century, and is also part of a larger project concerning psychocultural, gerontological and logopedic conditions of intergenerational communication.

Powieść Granica zapomnienia (2010) Siergieja Lebiediewa (ur. 1981) – przedmiot naszej analizy – to jednen z pierwszych literackich przykładów nowego nurtu w rosyjskim dyskursie memorialnym, dotychczas koncentującym się wyłącznie na upamiętnieniu ofiar rezimu stalinowskiego i pomijającym całkowitym milczeniem postacie katów. Przełamując społeczno-kulturowe tabu pisarz kreuje bohatera – byłego oprawcę rezimu, którego zbrodnicza natura ujawnia się poprzez cielesne praktyki pamięci. Celem artykułu jest analiza semantyczna języka ciała kata (gesty, mimika, wzrok, milczenie). Koncentracja Lebiediewa na aspektach cielesno-fizjologicznych pozwala zdemaskować skrzętnie skrywaną biografię oprawcy.

The novel Oblivion (2010) by Sergei Lebedev (born in 1981) - the subject of our analysis - is one of the first literary examples of a new trend in a Russian memorial discourse, so far focused solely on commemorating the victims of the Stalinist regime and ignoring the figures of executioners in a complete silence. By breaking the social and cultural taboos, the writer creates a hero - a former torturer of the regime whose criminal nature is revealed through the practices of a bodily memory. The purpose of this article is to semantically analyse the executioner's body language (i.e., gestures, facial expressions, eyesight, silence). Lebedev's concentration on bodily and physiological aspects makes it possible to unmask a carefully hidden biography of the torturer.
