Borderland as multicultural space

In the last decades borderlands studies have been rapidly developing in various disciplines. Within the changing function of European borders (from separating line between two souvereign states to borderscapes of intercultural flows and fluid identity) the focus of border scholars moved towards social relations and bottom-up perspective. Thus, borderlands are perceived as laboratories of European integration and multicultural spaces. For the aim of this article, borderlands are defined as spaces located on the geographical border between different states, nations and cultures that are objects of European Union cohesion policy. By analysing the Eurobarometer survey on cross-border cooperation I try to demonstrate differences between border regions covered by the Interreg cross-border cooperation programmes in terms of cross-border practices, general trust in others and attitudes towards citizens of neighbouring countries.

The paper discusses the representation of the so-called Regained Territories in reportage and novels by Ziemowit Szczerek. The aim of the paper is to identify the ways of creating a caricatural imaginary geography of the Polish-German borderlands which Szczerek calls “Poniemiecja” [“Post-German lands”]. An analysis of the source material made it possible to determine the functions of the borderlands theme in Szczerek’s works (demythologisation, deheroisation, confrontation). The paper also presents strategies of revising the pioneer myth of the so-called Regained Territories and of representing the Polish-German relations in Szczerek’s works of fiction and non- fiction.

Rethinking cross-border integration. A step to further discussion

This study analyzes the phenomenon of cross-border integration. The literature do not consider all major conditions of such the phenomenon. The goal of this article, is to present the various conditions of cross-border integration, which are too often ignored by many authors. Firstly, the paper presents an overview of different typologies of border regions depending on the intensity of interaction between them and accounting for the causes of their development. Afterward, the author presents the major conditions of the integration of border regions, in the light of the critical literature review. In the conclusions, the author presents propositions and suggestions for further academic debates on the phenomenon of cross-border integration.

This study concerns the analysis of the intensity of regional ties, in particular those between border regions. Given its strictly methodological character, the goal of this study is to delineate the possible uses of numerical taxonomy in assessing the intensity of cross-border ties. The first section of the text recounts the methodological problems resulting from the use of qualitative and quantitative data in regional studies, while also outlining a strategy of measuring cross-border ties within the scope of the taxonomic measure. This is followed by an analysis showcasing the potential of the proposed methodology in assessing ties between border regions.
