An Improvement of Quality of Statistical Matching for Survey Data Using Dynamic Caliper

Nowadays, matching is a widely used technique to estimate program net effects. The goal of the method is to establish a counterfactual state by choosing from the control pool a group that is similar to those in the treatment group. In this article we propose a modification of the matching with caliper procedure. The novelty in our approach is setting the caliper value as a fraction of estimated propensity score. The simulation results and examples are presented. Using Deheija and Wahba (1999) data benefits of the proposed approach are stressed. The obtained results indicate that proposed approach is more efficient than the one traditionally used.

Problem ewaluacji działań jest problemem brakujących danych. Zatem ważnym zagadnieniem jest konstrukcja adekwatnej kontrfaktycznej grupy porównawczej. W artykule zaproponowane modyfikację procedury pozwalającej uznać obserwację za dobrze dobrany stan kontrfaktyczny. Proponowana zmiana polega na wprowadzeniu nowego mechanizmu sprawdzania czy jednostka z grupy kontrolnej jest bliskim odpowiednikiem jednostki z grupy porównawczej. W ostatniej części artykułu zaprezentowano wyniki symulacji badającej właściwości statystyczne proponowanego rozwiązania. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że metoda pozwala osiągnąć lepsze rezultaty niż dotychczas wykorzystywane techniki.

The evaluation problem is a problem of missing data. Henceforth, the important issue is construction of adequate counterfactuals. In this arcicle modification of procedute that accepts observation as a good counterfactual is proposed. The proposed novelty is a change in the mechanism of observation comparision between treated and control group. I the last section the simulation results are presented. The simulation concerns statistical properties of proposed mechanism. The obtained results indicate that our method is capable of providing better results than technoques that are conterporary used.

A caliper mechanism is a common tool used to prevent from inexact matches. The existing literature discusses asymptotic properties of matching with caliper. In this simulation study we investigate properties in small and medium sized samples. We show that caliper causes a significant bias of the ATT estimator and raises its variance in comparison to one-to-one matching.

Mechanizm obcięcia (suwmiarki) jest szeroko stosowanym narzędziem zabezpieczającym przez słabo dopasowanymi połączeniami. W literaturze opisywane są własności asymptotyczne estymatorów z obcięciem. W artykule opisany jest eksperyment symulacji numerycznej badający własności tych estymatorów w małych i przeciętnie liczebnych próbach. Pokazujemy, że mechanizm obcięcia (suwmiarki) powoduje znaczne obciążenie estymatora przeciętnego efektu oddziaływania wobec jednostek poddanych oddziaływaniu (ang. ATT) i wzrost wartości jego wariancji w porównaniu ze standardowym estymatorem 1:1.
