In this paper we reflect on some analysis conducted by researchers as Laura Balbo, Mary Catherine Bateson and Martha Nussbaum who, although having not had direct relations among them or specific partnerships, have greatly contributed to elaborate concepts and categories regarding our new vision of the well-being. This concept, so dear to the economist Amartya Sen, draws nourishment from thoughts and lived belonging to women’s life experience, particularly as concerning their capacity to organize their daily and family life, taking care of others, shouldering the vulnerabilities and building their biographical paths with creativity and adaptation. So we can understand what is a good life through the realization of our abilities, that is of each person, and not using a utility calculation. This involves a new approach to life quality and human development, that is exactly the capabilities approach described by Sen, rehashed by Nussbaum but, for some aspects, it was already present into the studies which characterize the gender prospective.

This article addresses Pamela Sue Anderson’s philosophy of capability and vulnerability as an important contribution to the advancement of today’s feminist ethics. Following Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutics of l’homme capable, Anderson extends the phenomenological perspective of the capable human subject to embrace the distinctly feminine capability. She advocates for women’s recognizing and re-inventing of themselves as capable subjects, and claims that the perturbing initial loss of confidence in their reflective capacities can be redeemed via the transformations in women’s emotional and religious lives, as well as through their creative impulse. Locating in hermeneutics’ openness to ambiguity, incompleteness and insecurity a potential to unveil the non-transparent aspects of the assumed male-female equality, Anderson focuses on the interlocking aspect of human capability and vulnerability. She calls for transforming an ignorance of vulnerability into an ethical avowal of it. In reconfiguring patriarchal culture myths, Anderson sees the possibility of re-shaping our approach to vulnerability and capability, especially the human capacity for love.

Background We evaluated the satisfaction and improvement in learning outcomes of students taking a distance course in Public Health facilitated by the Institute for Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Hanoi Medical University and the State University of New York at Albany. Methods A total of 36 students participated in pre- and post- course surveys online. We developed the Vietnamese E-Learning Student Outcomes Profile (VESOP) to evaluate the impact of distance learning methods on students’ learning outcomes. Factor analysis was applied to construct the measure items into five domains: Academic Skills, Intellectual Abilities, Interactions, Responsibility and Educational Engagement. Multivariate regression models, selected using stepwise approach, determined factors associated with changes in students’ learning outcomes. Student satisfaction with the course was assessed by determining their willingness to participate in and pay for future distance learning courses. Results The students showed moderate improvement in “Interactions” and large improvements in the other four domains. Factors associated with improvements included previous academic performance, English proficiency, ease of access to the internet and computers, and time spent studying. All students passed the course, all would be willing to take another distance learning course, and 26 students would be willing to pay for such as course with certification. Conclusions Findings of this study highlight the potential of distance learning as a complementary educational method that could greatly benefit Public Health students. It encourages and supports the development of such training programs for Public Health students in Vietnam.

The aim of this paper is to identify the main drivers of highly skilled migration between regions. We argue that the spatial mobility of individuals should not be considered in terms of one-off displacements, but rather as a sequence of migration decisions within a certain time period. The important context of the research is provided by the economic transformation of Poland, accompanied by the growing demand for education, and the lack of well-established patterns of graduate mobility. By applying multinomial logit modelling on a unique database of Polish graduates, we find that all the tested migration strategies can be explained in terms of structural factors, human capital characteristics or aspirations/capabilities related variables.

The article aim is to answer the question whether Amartya Sen’s theory of justice – presented in the fullest way in his book The Idea of Justice (Oxford 2009) – may be regarded as intellectually attractive to legal philosophy. The analysis of this theory leads to the conclusion that it can be of limited relevance to that branch of philosophy. It is connected with the fact that Amartya Sen belongs to such a kind of thinkers who reject the focusing only on the institutions as a means to the realization of justice. Con¬sidering the so-called procedural justice, Sen refers only to the idea of an impartial spectator developed by Adam Smith, and essentially he is not interested in retributive justice. Thus, it seems that the richer theory of John Rawls still remains much more attractive for the jurisprudence. However, in the author’s opinion, some concepts created by Sen may be an important starting point for reflection on law, even apart from Sen’s entire theory. His notions of freedom (which can be adapted, for example, to judge paternalistic regulations) and of capability seem to be particularly inspiring from the point of view of legal philosophy.

Today, most interventions supporting the construction of active lives have as their sole final purpose helping people enter the job market and manage their employability and careers. The seriousness of the multidimensional crisis that has been growing for several decades now urges redirecting these interventions to a different purpose: that of contributing to the achievement of the objectives and goals defined by the major international organisations (and the experts in these matters) in order to cope with this crisis. Developing these new interventions is premised on grounding them in a transformed conceptual framework, where the concepts of the ‘form of life’ (Spranger, Agamben) and ‘active life’ (Arendt) hold the central place and are articulated with the notion of ‘capability’ (Sen). The ultimate purpose of this new support for the construction of actives life is to enable individuals, groups and communities to develop and mobilise the necessary capabilities for designing and implementing the forms of active life that are both economically and ecologically sustainable and humanely fair.

The article is an analysis of the sports talents of preschool and early school children. Physical activity is of great value in the lives of young people, especially in times when, for various reasons, this activity begins to disappear. The article emphasizes that sport and physical activity are one of the most underestimated instruments of social change. They play an important cultural and health role. A shared passion and universal principles are naturally associated with education which will never be too much in this area.

Artykuł jest analizą uzdolnień sportowych dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i wczesnoszkolnym. Aktywność ruchowa stanowi w życiu młodych ludzi ogromną wartość, szczególnie w czasach, kiedy z różnych przyczyn zaczyna ona zanikać W artykule podkreślono, że sport i aktywność fizyczna to jedne z najbardziej niedocenianych instrumentów zmiany społecznej. Odgrywają one ważną rolę kulturową i zdrowotną. Wspólna pasja i uniwersalne zasady są naturalnie powiązane z edukacją, której w tym zakresie nigdy nie będzie za dużo.
