Artykuł porusza problem osób funkcjonujących poza strukturami instytucji religijnych. Określono je mianem „pozakościelni”. Przyczyn pozakościelności poszukuje się w biografiach badanych (261 osób). W Polskiej rzeczywistości społecznej, w której Kościół katolicki ma pozycję religijnego monopolisty, pozakościelność, czyli brak związku z Kościołem instytucjonalnym, to zjawisko charakteryzujące stosunkowo nieliczną część populacji. Powstaje jednak pytanie: skąd się ta kategoria osób bierze? Innymi słowy, jakie są drogi dochodzenia do pozakościelności i jacy ludzie – biorąc pod uwagę ich właściwości demograficzno-społeczne – tymi drogami wędrują. W artykule, opierając się na badaniach empirycznych, podjęto próbę zarysowania odpowiedzi na te pytania. Przyjęto bowiem, że choć pozakościelnych jest mało, ich głos odnoszący się do Boga, wiary, Kościoła i jednocześnie postawa nieco na zewnątrz Kościoła, może zawierać ważkie problemy diagnozujące współczesną sytuację religijną w Polsce.

The article brings up the issue of people who are outside religious institutions. They are called "the unchurched" here. The reasons for their unchurchedness are sought in the participants' biographies (261 people). In the Polish social reality, where the Catholic Church is a religious monopolist, unchurchedness, i.e. a lack of relationship with the institutional Church, is a phenomenon that refers to a relatively small part of the population. However, the question arises: Where does this category of people stem from? In other words, what are the paths to unchurchedness and what kind of people – taking into consideration their sociodemographic characteristics – follow these paths? Based on his empirical research, the Author attempts to outline the answers to these questions in the article as he assumes that even though the unchurched constitute a small group, their opinions on God, faith and the Church, and their attitude that is a bit outside the Church, may contain important issues diagnosing the present religious situation in Poland.
