Central Auditory Processing Disorder – Currently Available Therapies in Poland

Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) or difficulties with information analysis in the higher stages of the auditory pathway (with peripheral part of the auditory system functioning properly) is the major issue of either children or adults. Crucial to providing assistance for these patients is detailed diagnosis which can, inter alia, rule out hypoacusia or mental disability. It provides grounds for proposing appropriate auditory training adjusted to the current needs and capabilities of the patient. The article reviews currently available therapies in Poland and presents various therapeutic approaches such as: traditional (using exercises of various auditory functions) and special auditory trainings (Tomatis method, Individual Auditory Stimulation by K. Johansen (IAS), Warnke’s method, PSPS (Polish: SPPS) – Polymodal Sensory Perception Stimulation, Neuroflow – active hearing training and GoBrain – playing with the sounds).

Centralne zaburzenia przetwarzania słuchowego, czyli trudności z analizą informacji w wyższych piętrach drogi słuchowej przy prawidłowo funkcjonującej części obwodowej układu słuchowego, stanowią istotny problem wielu dzieci, ale także dorosłych. Aby zaproponować pomoc takim osobom, niezbędne jest dokonanie szczegółowej diagnozy, m.in. w celu wykluczenia niedosłuchu czy upośledzenia umysłowego. Daje ona podstawę do wprowadzenia odpowiedniego treningu słuchowego dostosowanego do aktualnych potrzeb i możliwości pacjenta. Artykuł stanowi przegląd dostępnych obecnie w Polsce możliwości terapii. Omawia także różne podejścia terapeutyczne, m.in. tradycyjne, wykorzystujące ćwiczenia różnych funkcji słuchowych oraz specjalne treningi słuchowe, takie jak: metoda Tomatisa, Indywidualna Stymulacja Słuchu K. Johansena IAS, Metoda Warnkego, SPPS – Stymulacja Polimodalnej Percepcji Sensorycznej, Neuroflow – aktywny trening słuchowy oraz GoBrain – Zabawa z dźwiękami.

In order to provide assistance for these patients, a detailed diagnosis conducted in order to exclude, e.g. hypoacusis or intellectual disability, is necessary. It gives the basis to provide adequate hearing training, tailored to patients’ current needs and capabilities. The article reviews currently available therapies in Poland and presents various therapeutical approaches such as: traditional (using excercises of various hearing functions) and special auditory trainings (Tomatis method, Individual Hearing Stimulation by K. Johansen (IAS), Warnke’s method, SPPS – Polymodal Sensory Perception Stimulation, Neuroflow – active hearing training and GoBRain – playing with the sounds).

Coraz więcej pacjentów zgłasza się z podejrzeniem centralnych zaburzeń przetwarzania słuchowego. Do postawienia prawidłowej diagnozy niezbędny jest interdyscyplinarny zespół specjalistów, który dokona dokładnych badań oraz rzetelnej analizy otrzymanych wyników. Centralne zaburzenia przetwarzania słuchowego to problem występujący u pacjentów z prawidłową czułością słuchu, a ich trudności nie wynikają również z zaburzeń funkcji poznawczych i językowych, choć mogą z nimi współwystępować. Specjaliści zalecają trzy uzupełniające się podejścia, które umożliwiają poprawę funkcjonowania dziecka z centralnymi zaburzeniami przetwarzania słuchowego. Jednym z nich jest modyfikacja środowiska domowego oraz szkolnego. Niniejszy artykuł jest rozwinięciem tego zagadnienia, przedstawia także rolę najbliższego otoczenia w procesie terapii dziecka z centralnymi zaburzeniami przetwarzania słuchowego. Wskazówki w nim zawarte mają swoje zastosowanie także w terapii pacjentów z trudnościami w percepcji słuchowej.

There are more and more patients with clinical suspicion of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD). A team of experts who will conduct detailed studies and reliable analysis, is necessary to give a proper diagnosis of given results. CAPD is a problem occurring in patients with proper hearing sensitiveness and their difficulties are not the result of cognitive and lingual impairment, although they can coexist. Specialists recommend three complementary approaches that help improve the functioning of a child with central auditory processing disorders. One of them is the modification of the home and school environment. This article constitutes the development of this issue, and presents the role of the immediate environment in the therapy of a child with central auditory processing disorders. The guidelines provided the article also apply in therapy of patients with difficulties in auditory perception.
