The paper attempts to apply contemporary social theory to research on ancient societies. The author intends to demonstrate the European economic system as it emerged towards the end of the Roman empire and in the early medieval period. For this purpose the author makes extensive use of Immanuel Wallerstein’s theory of world system.

The study aims to present the need to improve education at Slovak educational centres in Great Britain based on respondents’ opinions. The research sample consisted of 56 members of the teaching staff, 81 parents and 37 children from 13 centres. Data were gathered by an electronic questionnaire modified for each respondent group. Data were processed in the program Štatistika, evaluated by descriptive statistics and hypotheses by inference statistics. Research results indicated the need to increase the quality of instruction, mainly in the innovation of methods, provision of didactic aids, support for teachers and appropriateness of instruction to children’s language skills.

Thanks to the work of Pascale Casanova, Franco Moretti, David Damrosch and many others, over the past two decades, the concept of world literature has once again become the subject of thorough examination within the field of literary studies, especially in relation to cosmopolitanism and globalization. When it comes to the study of individual national literatures and specific regional contexts, as well as to the definition of comparative literature as a discipline, debates regarding its background, its reach and limitations could not be ignored. World literature thus appears as a heterogenous entity – always manifesting in different contexts in different forms – consistently in dialogical exchange with specificities of a particular literature and culture. Instead of discussing the problematic relation between centre and periphery or criticizing the idea of global literary and cultural canon, the avant-garde as an international and global phenomenon that appears even more radically on the so-called periphery is what is of primary interest to me. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that avant-garde (in its various forms and radical expressions) simultaneously challenges art as an institution and introduces the idea of a decentred geography of world literature.

This article is one of the voices in the discussion on the semi-peripheral nature of knowledge production systems, inspired by the publication of Gra peryferyjna by Tomasz Warczok and Tomasz Zarycki. The authors focus on the methodological challenges facing the analysis  of the nature of science systems from the perspective of the global division of labour. As a possible solution to the current difficulties, they indicate the need for a symmetrical synthesis of the theoretical perspectives of Pierre Bourdieu and Immanuel Wallerstein. On the one hand, such perspective avoids viewing phenomena in the field of science only through the economic lense, and on the other, it makes possible to rethink the dependence in which science and the economy remain. Only such theoretical framework enables to capture the mechanisms of creating hierarchical divisions in global science, such as the centre and periphery.

Z jednej strony pozwoli to uniknąć sprowadzenia zjawisk w polu nauki wyłącznie do poziomu ekonomicznego, z drugiej zaś da szansę przemyśleć zależność, w jakiej pozostają do siebie nauka i gospodarka. Dopiero tak skonstruowana rama teoretyczna daje możliwość uchwycenia mechanizmów wytwarzania hierarchizujących podziałów w globalnej nauce takich jak ten na centrum i peryferia.
