The effects of globalization on child labor in developing countries

This paper inquires the effects of globalization on child labor in developing countries via cross-country analysis by decomposing globalization to its components; foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade. The findings reveal that the relationship between the child labor supply and gross domestic product per capita (PCGDP) can be expressed as a U shape. The study indicates that the child labor increases in the developing countries whose PCGDP levels are above $7500 since the net effect of globalization is positive for the positive substitution effect is bigger than the negative income effect. Data have been collected from UNICEF and World Bank.

Publikacja ma również na celu zainicjowanie konstruktywnego dialogu o ich praktycznym wykorzystaniu w Polsce między środowiskami zajmującymi się obroną praw dzieci, środowiskami akademickimi oraz biznesem.

The article’s author presents analyzes of the practical aspects of implementing the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept in the context of prevention of human rights violations, in particular the use of child labor. The publication is an attempt of preliminary assessment of available tools. The author analyzes the UN Global Compact Principles, ISO 26000 standard and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting guidelines. The publication aims is to initiate a constructive dialogue between communities, dealing with the defense of children’s rights, academia and business, on their practical use in Poland.

La presente investigación tiene como objetivo principal analizar cómo la condición de ser madre soltera adolescente pudiera determinar el tipo de incorporación de éstas al mercado de trabajo y las condiciones laborales respectivas. La forma para abordar el objetivo que nos planteamos fue a través de un estudio de caso de madres solteras adolescentes que se dedicaron a la venta de alimentos en el Mercado de Tepito. Los resultados obtenidos contradicen las tesis que asocian al sector informal con precariedad laboral y nos llevan a reflexionar que el concepto de precariedad rebasa la escisión entre el sector formal e informal.

The present research has as main purpose is to analyze how the condition of being unwed teenage mother could identify the type of incorporation of these to the labor market and the respective labor conditions. The way to address the objective we set ourselves was through a case study of single teenage mothers that were devoted to the sale of food in the Mercado de Tepito. The results contradict the thesis which associate with the informal sector with precarious employment and lead us to think that the concept of precariousness exceeds the rift between the formal and informal sector.
