Serial killers have always been in the centre of interest for the reason why they murder umpteen victims without self-control, remorse or a sense of guilt. They stalk stealthily and have the capacity to continue their massacre for ages via diverse countries and states. In this study, I intend to widen my previous study on serial killers with more cases and more background information about the roots of their amok from both the psychological aspect and from the aspect of the damage to the frontal lobe, the role of the hypothalamus, the limbic system, and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex as well as the size of the amygdala which enhance the aggressive behaviour and contribute to uncontrolled sadism. I highlight the vital impact of childhood traumas, humiliation, neglect and the principal elements of family history. I comprise some of the most notorious psychopaths and cluster the common traits of these perpetrators. The role of superiority, maintaining power, manipulation, disability in physical characteristics, profit-making, sensation-seeking, deficiencies in empathy, pathological need to control others and attention-seeking are crucial factors as well. According to psychologists, having a grandiose sense of their own self-worth, narcissistic attitude, and addictive personalities may all contribute to murders.

W utworach Ursa Widmera, szkicujących w najróżniejszych wariantach pozbawione złudzeń utopie, nieustannie zaznacza się antagonizm między światem rzeczywistym a tęsknotą za światem barwniejszym i lepszym, między poetycką wizją a rzeczywistością społeczną. O kluczowym znaczeniu motywu tęsknoty w twórczości Widmera świadczy już sam tytuł jego eseju Das Normale und die Sehnsucht (1972) [Normalność i tęsknota], w którym pisarz sformułował swą poetykę w formie pytań o to, co najbardziej go zajmuje i co stara się wyrazić w swych utworach. Artykuł omawia centralne pytania postawione w tym eseju, odwołując się równocześnie do wybranych utworów szwajcarskiego pisarza, szczególnie do opowiadania Liebesbrief für Mary (1993) [List miłosny do Mary]. Celem rozważań jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jakim stopniu i w jakiej formie literatura może wyrażać tęsknoty.

The work of Urs Widmer creates in the most diverse variations Utopias devoid of illusions – the contrast between reality and yearning for a better and brighter world, between poetic vision and social reality are his constant themes. The title of his programmatic essay Das Normale und die Sehnsucht (1972) [Normality and Longing] testifies to the fact that longing is the constituent element of his narratives. In this essay, the writer discusses in the form of questions what his main preoccupations are and what he was actually attempting to achieve with his tales. Accordingly, this article considers the central questions posed in the essay and demonstrates in selected works of the Swiss author – especially in the story Liebesbrief für Mary (1993) [Love-letter for Mary] – to what extent and in what form literature can be considered as an expression of yearnings.

In Urs Widmers Werk, das in den unterschiedlichsten Varianten illusionslose Utopien ‚in die Luft‘ entwirft, wird dauernd der Gegensatz zwischen Wirklichkeit und der Sehnsucht nach einer besseren und bunteren Welt, zwischen poetischer Vision und gesellschaftlicher Realität thematisiert. Dass die Sehnsucht das konstituierende Element seines Erzählens bildet, bezeugt bereits der Titel seines programmatischen Essays Das Normale und die Sehnsucht (1972), in dem der Schriftsteller in Form von Fragen dies diskutierte, was ihn vordergründig beschäftigte und was er mit seinem Erzählen eigentlich zu erreichen suchte. Der Beitrag geht demzufolge den zentralen, in diesem Essay formulierten Fragen nach und präsentiert an einigen ausgewählten Werken des Schweizer Autors – insbesondere an der Erzählung Liebesbrief für Mary (1993) –, inwiefern und in welcher Gestalt Literatur als Ausdruck der Sehnsüchte betrachtet werden kann.
