The paper deals with the relationship between text and image in a Romanian version of Robinson Crusoe published for children in the 1890s. The 5 colour plates and 50 black-and-white pictures are looked into with a view to pinpointing those aspects of the text which were visually illustrated (e.g. either climactic moments or details which are relevant in terms of characterisation), the nature of the text-image interaction (i.e. symmetrical, complementary, enhancing), and the position of the picture with respect to the text (i.e. following, preceding, interrupting it).
