Heteronormativity refers to a rigorous social gender order in which the only assumed and accepted gender division is between male and female. Non-heteronormativity implies a loosening of the social gender dichotomy. Both the concepts of heteronormativity and non-heteronormativity in relation to children are rarely used, probably because of prevailing notions of an essentially asexual and unproblematically heteronormative, ‘natural’ process of gender identity acquisition in childhood. In this paper, I address the issue of gender and sexuality in childhood in academic discourses and analyse the construction of non-heteronormativity in selected children’s books. Impulses for the research are provided by critical readings of classical psychological and sociological developmental theories, as well as theories and research on the construction of gender identities in children rooted in the paradigm of social constructivism. The presentation of books created with children in mind, in which the authors point to a way of “taming” non-heteronormativity in the children’s world, may strengthen inclusive tendencies in educational activities and change the existing social gender order.

The article is a review of the latest children’s books that deal with refugee issues. In the following text there are discussions also performances for children that we can see in the context of migration. These books for children have the potential to contribute to shaping and strengthening the empathic and open attitude of young readers who will be responsible for civil society in the future.

Artykuł stanowi przegląd najnowszych książek dla dzieci, które podejmują tematykę uchodźców. Pojawiają się tu także omówienia spektakli dla młodych widzów, które można odczytać w kontekście masowych migracji. Wymienione książki dla dzieci mają szansę przyczynić się do kształtowania i wzmacniania empatycznej i otwartej postawy młodych czytelników, którzy w przyszłości będą odpowiadać za kształt społeczeństwa obywatelskiego.

Professor Janusz Dunin-Horkawicz (b. 26 June 1931 in Vilna, d. 27 July 2007 in Łódź) was a humanist, university lecturer and social activist. His scholarly interests encompassed the theory and practice of social communication by means of the written word and iconic images; the history of literary, children’s and popular books; librarianship and bibliophilism. In his reflection on the world of printed matter, Dunin used several parallel discourses: bibliological, bibliophilic and media studiesdiscourse. In order to describe Dunin’s achievements, we would have to abandon the entire encyclopaedia- and dictionary-based conceptual framework we use to describe scholars. Descriptions like eminent literature scholar, popular culture scholar, media studies expert, bibliologist, bibliophile are applicable to some extent, but they do not describe all of Professor Dunin’s competencies, limiting the discussion about his role in the humanities today. As a scholar Dunin followed his own path in pursuit of learning; he had a unique gift for observing the world of books and literature, and his vast knowledge enabled him to move effortlessly across various research fields. Consequently, his conclusions were cross-disciplinary and were expressed in a light style combining scientific approach with popular appeal. According to the author of this article, Professor Dunin’s legacy deserves to be analysed in detail by contemporary scholars.

The Slavic Department of The Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences was created in 1883 as a Slavic non-Russian collection. At present, the Slavic department numbered about 80 000 items. The Polish collection consisted of more than 40 000 items, among them about 2700 books and magazines published in 17th-18th centuries. The main sources for the acquisition of Polish collection were the purchase of books, the gifts from organizations and scientists, and the war booty. In the 19th century, The Slavic Department received legal deposit copies of all Polish editions published in the Russian Empire. Research work on the Polish collection started in the late 1990s, since that time there were published several catalogues, studied the collection of old Polish books, and all the books published before 19th century were restored and transferred to conservation. The Slavic Department is in the process of developing an electronic catalogue of its collections.

Historia Oddziału Słowiańskiego Biblioteki Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk zaczyna się w latach 80. XIX w. Obecnie zbiory druków słowiańskich (wydanych przed 1930 r.) liczą około 80 000 tytułów w trzystu tysiącach woluminów. Najbogatszym zbiorem Oddziału Słowiańskiego jest kolekcja polska. Liczy około 40 000 tytułów, czyli ponad 80 000 egzemplarzy, w tym około 2000 periodyków i 2700 starych druków. Badania nad kolekcją polską w Oddziale Słowiańskim zaczęły się dopiero w 1995 r. Niniejszy artykuł zawiera podsumowanie studiów przeprowadzonych w ciągu ostatnich 20. lat.
