The paper is a report on the quantitative research of civil activity of women in the Province of Silesia (N = 200). Research technique used here is CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview). The starting point of the proposal is conceptualisation of term of active citizenship and subsequently identification specific indicators that will be taken to represent the phenomenon explored (such as political participation, interest in government, law enforcement, altruism and volunteering, trust in people and institutions, and the use of the privileges of direct democracy).The article shows the importance of this project for development of civil society in Poland and the possibility of change that can be achieved in this way.

Civil activity of Vasyl Prohoda during the emigration in ČSSR (1922–1939)

In the article, the fields of civil activity of Vasyl Prohoda, a Ukrainian military figure (Lieutenant Colonel of the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic), a public figure, engineer, and a historian are analyzed in Czechoslovakia. His civil activity in the development of the Ukrainian Economic Academy (“Academic community”) and the “Society of former soldiers of the Army of the UNR”, the Ukrainian Sokol movement is described. The failures of the Ukrainians in the national liberation actions of 1917–1921 led to the forced relocation of many participants abroad. Among the leading centers of the Ukrainian interwar emigration, the Czechoslovak Republic (ČSSR) was distinguished by its liberal political regime and democratic freedoms. Due to the fortunate conditions, Ukrainian emigrants formulate various networking of public-political organizations, created to protect the interests of Ukrainian emigrants in the international environment, and to continue their professional activities abroad. They launched also culturaleducational and scientific activities. The study clarifies the ideological priorities of Vasyl Prohoda, his active organizational, educational and ideological components of civil activity in the above-mentioned organizations. The purpose of this article is to analyze the civil activity of Vasyl Prohoda in the Ukrainian emigration in the ČSSR in the interwar period of the twentieth century. The goal involves solving the following tasks: 1) find out the fields of civil activities during studying in the Ukrainian Economic Academy (UEA); 2) conducted civil activity in 1920–1930s. In particular, the study presents the activities of Vasyl Prohoda in the Academic Community of UEA, "The Community of Former Army of the UNR", the Agrarian Community, the Ukrainian Sokol movement.

Artykuł analizuje kierunki aktywności społecznej Wasyla Prochody, ukraińskiego działacza wojskowego i społecznego okresu międzywojennego w Czechosłowacji. Scharakteryzowano czynny udział w rozwoju Ukraińskiej Akademii Gospodarczej, Towarzystwa Byłych Żołnierzy Armii UNR oraz Ukraińskiego Ruchu Sokolskiego. Po I wojnie światowej, ukraińskiej rewolucji dziesiątki tysięcy najbardziej aktywnych obywateli Ukrainy, głównie żołnierzy armii ukraińskiej, wyjechało na emigrację. Większość z nich przebywała w Czechosłowacji, gdzie mieli możliwość zdobycia wykształcenie na uczelniach ukraińskich i czechosłowackich. Wasyl Prochoda, jeden z przywódców ukraińskiego ruchu emigracyjnego w międzywojennej Czechosłowacji, był ukraińskim działaczem wojskowym, społecznym i politykiem, podpułkownikiem armii UNR, historykiem. Brał czynny udział w działalności Ukraińskiej Akademii Gospodarczej w Podiebradach, działalności kulturalnej i edukacyjnej, tworzył różne stowarzyszenia, organizacje, grupy. Celem artykułu jest analiza aktywności społecznej Wasyla Prochody w środowisku emigracji ukraińskiej w Czechosłowacji w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym. Aby go osiągnąć podjęto refleksję dotyczącą W ramach tej refleksji podjęto następujące problemy badawcze 1) analiza kierunków aktywności społecznej podczas studiów w Ukraińskiej Akademii Gospodarczej; 2) analiza działalności społecznej pod koniec lat dwudziestych – w latach trzydziestych XX wieku.

Political science research on the civil activity are mostly concentrated on the quantitative approach, the results of such research allow for determining the scale of a phenomenon, comparing the situation on the defined areas, they also provide the possibility to observe tendencies and changes. The aim of the article is to present the use of qualitative methods in the completed research on the civil activity of secondary school students in Kraków, where focusing on the part of a reality allowed for observing the group in context and better understanding of the phenomenon. The article presents basic fortes and weaknesses of the quantitative and qualitative studies, as well as possibilities of secondary data analysis. The analysis results of the study conducted using the observation and interview (individual and group) methods and preliminary conclusions, which can be useful for quantitative research preparation for the 13–16 age group have been presented in the article. The realization of both quantitative and qualitative research does not, however, give a certain answer for all the research questions and brings many new challenges.

The text invites the reader to reflect upon civil activity taken in unexpected places and forms, and going beyond its conventional notions. The first thesis put forward is that members of isolated homogeneous communities (young people in particular) rather than evading civil activity practise civil idleness, much in line with what society expects of them. From this stems our next thesis, which prompts to seek civil activity somewhere else.

Artykuł zaprasza do refleksji nad nieoczywistą aktywnością obywatelską podejmowaną w nieoczekiwanych miejscach i formach. Pierwsza analizowana teza głosi, że członkowie izolowanych homogenicznych społeczności (w szczególności młodzież) nie tyle unikają obywatelskiej aktywności, co praktykują obywatelską bezczynność, zgodnie ze społecznymi oczekiwaniami. Z tego wynika nasza kolejna teza, zgodnie z którą aktywności obywatelskiej należy szukać gdzieś indziej (somewhere else).

Celem artykułu jest analiza wybranych wartości obywatelskich mieszkańców Łodzi istotnych w kontekście budowania społeczeństwa obywatelskiego. Eksploracji poddano dwa aspekty. Po pierwsze, starano sie określić stosunek mieszkańców Lodzi do dóbr publicznych, po drugie, w analizach uwzględniono aspekt reakcji obywateli na łamanie prawa w swoim otoczeniu. Podstawę empiryczna prezentowanych danych stanowią wyniki reprezentatywnych badan ilościowych zrealizowanych w ramach projektu „Odrodzenie postprzemysłowych miast peryferyjnych” na próbie 700 dorosłych mieszkańców Lodzi. Projekt realizowany był ze środków finansowych Narodowego Centrum Nauki w latach 2011–2014. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, ze mieszkańców Łodzi charakteryzuje niewielka troska o dobro publiczne oraz niski poziom zainteresowania kwestiami społecznymi.

The main objective of the article is to analyze the selected values related to the civic status of residents of Lódz, relevant in the context of building civic society. The analysis regarded two aspects. First, the authors tried to determine the residents’ of Lódz general attitude to public goods; second, they tried to analyze the citizens’ reactions to incidents of breaking the law in their neighbourhoods. The empirical basis for the presented data were the results of the representative quantitative research realized under the project “Revival of postindustrial peripheral cities”, conducted on a sample of 700 adult residents of Lódz. The project was carried out with the financial aid of the National Center for Science in the years 2011–2014. The research shows that the residents of Lódz are characterized by a minor concern for the public good and a low level of interest in social issues.
