The outbreak of the civil war in Spain caught the attention of not only European „powers” – Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. The Republic of Poland observed it mainly in terms of its influence on French politics and the evolution of martial arts, as well as the participation of Polish citizens in International Brigades. This formation was perceived as a tool of Soviet interests, and the volunteers struggling in its ranks as potential agents of Soviet intelligence. That is why all information was collected about them, trying above all to get them from the volunteers themselves. Those who granted the most valuable were promised to restore Polish citizenship, which was automatically taken away by the Act of 1920 and 1938. One of the most comprehensive accounts was made by Andrzej Rozborski – Lieutenant XIII Brigade, staying in Spain from August 1937 to August 1938.

Wybuch wojny domowej w Hiszpanii przyciągnął uwagę nie tylko europejskich „mocarstw” – Niemiec, Włoch, Francji, Wielkiej Brytanii i Związku Radzieckiego. Rzeczpospolita Polska obserwowała ją głównie pod kątem wpływu na politykę Francji i ewolucję sztuki wojennej oraz udział obywateli polskich w Brygadach Międzynarodowych. Formacja ta postrzegana była bowiem jako narzędzie radzieckich interesów, a walczący w jej szeregach ochotnicy – jako potencjalne aktywa radzieckiego wywiadu. Dlatego zbierano na ich temat wszelkie informacje, starając się przede wszystkim pozyskać je od samych ochotników. Tym, którzy udzielili najbardziej wartościowych, obiecano przywrócenie obywatelstwa polskiego, które odebrano im automatycznie na mocy ustawy z 1920 i 1938 r. Jedną z najobszerniejszych relacji złożył Andrzej Rozborski – porucznik XIII Brygady, przebywający w Hiszpanii od sierpnia 1937 do sierpnia 1938 r.
