The following article is an attempt at exploring the meaning of the erotic in Eberhard Hilscher’s novels (Die Weltzeituhr, Venus bezwingt den Vulkan, Glückspieler und Spielverderber). The analysis focuses not only on the erotic adventures of the protagonists, but also on the role of the erotic in Hilscher’s esthetic programme. The detailed examination (close reading) of the novels leads to the following conclusion: the author presents different possibilities of the representation of the erotic, which in his view should be conducive not only to the entertainment, but also to the education of the reader.

The article offers a detailed analysis of the poem “The Map” by Elizabeth Bishop. As the opening text of Bishop’s first collection and also of all the editions of her collected poems, the poem can be read as a statement of the poet’s creative principles. The close-reading of the poem stresses the importance of the various encounters examined in the poem: the map (and the poem) is seen as a border space where “the other” can be approached in a kind of creative dialogue in which a plurality of perspectives co-exists, no one is in complete control, and the perception of the other is seen as an open dynamic process which is never completed.

Tomasz Cieślak-SokołowskiDepartment of Contemporary CriticismFaculty of PolishJagiellonian University The Return of Close Reading in Contemporary Interpretations of 20th Century LiteraturesAbstract  The present article offers an insight into contemporary discussions concerning the category of close reading. It is in such a context that the author is able to shed light upon the special status of such forms of contemporary literary criticism that do not attempt to change paradigms, but rather are organized by gestures of corrections and reconfiguration. Postulating the “return of close reading,” the author departs from the basic tenets of New Criticism to illustrate some of the more recent concepts of what close reading is today and how they affect the interpretation of contemporary works of literature and, by extension, texts of culture. Keywords: close reading, New Criticism, interpretation, 20th century literature Powroty do close reading we współczesnych lekturach literatury XX wieku  Streszczenie Artykuł skupia się na próbie opisania współczesnych dyskusji na temat kategorii close reading. Jednocześnie autor tekstu zwraca uwagę na szczególny status współczesnych badań literackich, którym nie tyle zależy na zmianach paradygmatów, ile dynamice rewizyjnych korekt, przesunięć i rekonfiguracji. This paper is devoted to the New Orleans stage in the writings of the nineteenth-century American literary journalist, Lafcadio Hearn. The major focus is on the writer’s fascination with the city’s unique Southern character which was skillfully grasped and conveyed by Hearn during the decade of his residence in New Orleans. The articles published in the Cincinnati Commercial and the Daily City Item are discussed in terms of the author’s sensual and emotional approach towards what he considered as the greatest assets of New Orleans: its tropicality, the Creole element, the climate, and the women. Special attention is paid to Hearn’s sensitivity to feminine beauty as the crucial determinant of the city image he managed to describe for future generations.

The tactic of inquiring reading (close reading, explikation de texte) focuses mainly on the text’s subject – it is beneficial if it is of topical character. It is then easier to find and interprete intertextual connections which put some pieces together. In such reading of the chosen poems – Do Kossowskiej w tańcu by Trembecki and Król zabity by Grochowiak – we can see the classical high style of an enlightened poet and turpism, meaning the aesthetics of ugliness of the modern poet, who takes up the game with literary tradition. In this way, you can manage the history of literature…

This paper is concerned with the methodological, practical and analytical dimension of creative writing training. Lectures and seminars for first year students „Literary masterpieces of XX–XXI Century”, have been dedicated to the education of close reading skills, which is an introduction to the skills of creative writing, understood as re-writing, or re-formulation of canonical literary texts. Creative writing students have been instructed how to find their own voice on the margins of famous texts. This approach for creative writing education is presented by Nicholas Delbanco, author of The Sincerest Form. Writing Fiction by Imitation. Close reading and creative re-writing of canonical literary works is a significant exercise of stylization, pastiche, narrative modes, point-of-view technique, focalization and world and character building processes. Exercises like these are not only creative writing training but also a workout of critical thinking, based on influential paradigms like post-colonialism, feminism, cultural studies, due to the subversive potential of re-written literature. This is an interesting challenge for both sides of the education process: for students and for academic teachers. This paper is a review of analytical procedures, practical exercises, questions and issues which were given to students during a course on „Literary masterpieces of XX–XXI Century” (dedicated to Lord Jim by J. Conrad, The Death in Venice by T. Mann; The Stranger by A. Camus) and an opportunity to present students’ short stories and exam task fragments.

The present interpretation is an attempt to apply the close reading method to Bohdan Zadura’s poem „Zbuntowane komórki” [Rebellious cells]. The analysis reveals mysterious relations between the motifs of „snowless winter”, memory and a mole in the face of a close person that has been removed by plastic surgery. A juxtaposition of a landscape with a fragment of a portrait evokes particular contexts: that of beauty and aesthetics, healthiness and the unnerving medical examination that may suggest malignant tumor and, first of all, violated identity. The oncological theme intertwines with the ontological problem. In addition, the relations between the presented world in the poem and the texts turn out to be parallel: the „salubrious” classical form of the sonnet, available in the process of interpretation, is conducive to the subjugation of the cancer worry.

This article concerns the existing research on the lesser-known, early diary of Gustaw Herling‑Grudziński about his journey to Burma titled A Journey to Burma. In this article, the author distinguishes two main interpretative themes appearing in the most important texts dealing with this work: genealogical issues, and those related to history, politics and social life. By showing the advantages and effects of these texts, the author points to those elements that still have not been thoroughly analysed. Thus, the need for an in-depth reading of this work with the post-colonial perspective taken into account is emphasised, as is a closer look at this text in the context of the whole output of the author of A Journey to Burma and his unique writing style. This article discusses in detail the main problems and potential benefits of each approach.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę dotychczasowych badań nad mniej znanym, wczesnym dziennikiem Gustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego z okresu jego podróży do Birmy (Podróż do Burmy).

Rap Genius, website dedicated to the annotation of hip-hop lyrics, is interesting phenomenon for a few reasons. First of all, it's only one made with such panache, multimedial encyclopedia devoted to interpretation; secondly, this initiative, occurrence of network creativity, is evidence for need of „collaborative close reading” in internet. Thirdly, website founded in 2009 gives a chance to new, attractive and effective model of education.

This article examines how literature education has changed in Finnish upper secondary school and what kind of theoretical background assumptions are made in the processing of literature. Early on, the aim of teaching literature in Finnish upper secondary schools was to emphasize national identity. Literary works about Finnish people were considered the strength of the young nation. The teaching of literature focused on learning national literature, and on knowing the authors and their works. From the 1950s onwards, new criticism influenced the teaching of literature, and close reading became the key tool for approaching literature. Gradually, the teaching of literature expanded from national literature to young adults’ literature, popular literature, and contemporary literature. In the 1980s, various literary approaches and background theories were emphasized in the learning materials. However, current literary teaching is still tied to new critical and formalistic theory. At the end of the article, the question is asked whether it would be necessary to change this approach so that literature would continue to attract young readers.

The essay brings an exhaustive analysis of the semantically productive features discernible in the visual structure of the photograph The Terror of War, taken by Nick Ut near the mistakenly napalm-bombed town of Trảng Bàng. The unique nature of the famous photograph lies in the fact that, despite circumstances that were extremely restrictive in terms of the timing, perspective and composition of the frame, by a sheer stroke of luck it proved possible to capture on film an image that is extremely meaningful and semantically loaded. The semantics of the image was determined by the author by comparing this image and the original frame with a photograph of the same situation taken by Ut a moment later, as well as, above all, through a detailed analysis of the image’s structure. This structure reveals the essential characteristics of the language of narrative images, which constitute the close dependence of semantics on the rigour of composition as syntax. Through them, the photograph acquires a highly expressive iconic character, not only in the sense that it has become a kind of an “icon” perpetuating the image of a specific event in collective consciousness and historical memory, but above all in the sense defined by Max Imdahl’s conception of the iconics.

The article demonstrates the need to construct a new hermeneutics in the area of digital media. According to the author, the answer to this need within game studies consists of executing close textual interpretations, concentrated on detail and scrupulously grasping significant nuances at various levels of such cultural texts. As examples of digital texts particularly susceptible to such analysis, he refers not only to narrative games but also games experimental in form and aspiring to be works of art, such as The Graveyard by Tale of Tales.
PL
The Graveyard autorstwa Tale of Tales).

Tis essay ofers a close reading of the Diary (c. 1465) of Squire Jaroslav, the Commentarius (c. 1467; Czech original lost, a Latin translation printed in 1577) by Václav Šašek of Bířkov, and the modern reworking of Šašek’s text in a children’s novel by Alois Jirásek (Až na konec světa, published in 1890). Te authors try to elucidate the characteristic features of these travelogues by examining the various kinds of fssures that can be found in each text. Troughout Jaroslav’s diary, for example, these rifs are indicated by “etc.”, which the reader is simply invited to fll in. Pavlovský introduces discontinuity into the story by inserting verbatim citations of various documents and charters that ultimately glorify Pavlovský’s benefactors, the family of the leader of Šašek’s legation, Lev of Rožmitál. Finally, Jirásek is presented as an exemplary post-medieval reader of antique texts who flls the ofered gaps with didactic content, anchoring his own agenda in the picturesque scafolding of a knightly quest to the edge of the world.
