This article focuses on the relatively new area of communication research and communciology, which is the history of communication. The paper summarizes the origins of communication history and indicates the most important scientific areas and approaches that have shaped its present condition. The historical approach to communication phenomena is derived from several important and influential fields of communication research, e.g. the Toronto School of Communications, the ritual view of communication, intellectual history and history of mentalities, cultural anthropology and others. This paper outlines the origins as well as the current state of research and connects its main areas with three fundamental aspects of communication history: communication practices, media and collective representations of communication.

The article is dedicated to depicting the Ruthenian lands and their historical traditions in the works of the Old Polish historiographic literature and the influence of this discourse on the culture of remembrance within the noble elite. The manner of the Russian territories in selected works of Polish historians of the 18 th century has been characterized (Karol Wyrwicz, Jan Bielski, Franciszek Paprocki, and Adam Naruszewicz). In this article you can find examples of collective representations’ ideas in functional texts dealing with the day-to-day living with the addition of symbolic meaning, such as funeral sermons, where some references to the Ruthenian-Lithuanian historical traditions were discovered.

The article addresses a source rarely used by social researchers, namely the inscriptions on wayside crosses in rural settings. Crosses erected “in memory of” preserve social memory and forestall the natural process of oblivion. These inscriptions are the products of social reflection, and express collective representations and the collective opinion of the community. One can deduce the values most important to the community, and those most endangered, from the wording imprinted on the crosses. The preserved inscriptions are all the more valuable as a state of collective consciousness in rural communities has yet to be constructed on the basis of individual testimonies in the form of letters or diaries. The inscriptions on crosses in an area of the Lublin voivodeship, enriched with information gathered regarding the local context, constitute the article’s empirical basis.
