There is a lacuna in literature from Western Africa on how issue of participation influence socio-economic impacts at ecotourism destinations. This paper investigates the socio-economic impacts of ecotourism based on Boabeng- Fiema Monkey Sanctuary in Ghana. The paper is based on primary data generated from Boabeng and Fiema communities. Seventy mainly opened-ended questionnaires were administered face-to-face to purposively selected residents from the two communities, alongside, in-depth interviews with the management of the Sanctuary and focus group with purposively selected individuals from Boabeng and Fiema. The study reveals that the residents of the communities face burgeoning challenges such as shrinking livelihood options, inadequate involvement of community in the ecotourism, poor state of the visitor centre, inadequate government support and poor roads.

Community participation has entered the 21st century and the era of e-participation, e-government and e-planning. With the opportunity to use Public Participation Support Systems, Computer-Aided Web Interviews and crowdsourcing mapping platforms, citizens are equipped with the tools to have their voices heard. This paper presents a case study of the deployment of such an online mapping platform in Jeseník, Czech Republic. In total, 533 respondents took part in the online mapping survey, which included six spatial questions. Respondents marked 4,714 points and added 1,538 comments to these points. The main aim of the research was to find whether there were any significant differences in the answers from selected groups (age, gender, home location) of respondents. The results show largest differences in answers of various (below 20 and above 20 year) age groups. Nevertheless further statistical examination would be needed to confirm the visual comparison.

Omawiany projekt zakładał porównanie eksperckiej, architektoniczno-urbanistycznej oceny jakości wybranych osiedli w Lipsku i Katowicach z oceną społeczną, zawartą w ankietach i wywiadach z mieszkańcami oraz aktorami lokalnymi. W trakcie oceny eksperckiej wybrane do badań osiedla przebadano pod kątem szeregu ważnych kryteriów jakościowych. Ocena ta wypadła stosunkowo dobrze. Podobnie wysoko zostały one ocenione w badaniach partycypacyjnych.

The main basis for joint Polish – German research on the past, present, and future of large post-socialist housing estates found in both countries was their terrible reputation in the 1990s. The UFZ research center in Leipzig (Germany) has been monitoring post-socialist communities since 1979. The center has noted a change in the public perception of large post-socialist housing estates in Germany. The goal of the joint project was to compare evaluations made by experts in the field of architecture and urban planning with separate evaluations made by housing estate residents in the cities of Leipzig and Katowice (Poland). Evaluations made by housing estate residents consisted of traditional surveys and interviews with residents and other local stakeholders. Expert analysis of each selected housing estate was based on a variety of relevant quality criteria. Each expert analysis produced mostly positive results. Both analyzed housing estates were also highly ranked in surveys of housing estate residents. Future development of these communities is dependent on many key external factors that produce a strong impact and may affect the quality of life of estate residents. Development scenarios were outlined based on the factors identified in the course of research. These included a lack of broad strategic perspective on the future of large post-socialist housing estates in the context of growing depopulation and population aging in Poland. Research results for Germany are also briefly discussed. The research results indicate a need to develop additional normative scenarios that would guide government policy. It is also necessary to further engage private developers in an effort to stem the tide of empty apartments and chaotic demolitions that ruin spatial order in cities.
