The paper analyzes confirmation names that confirmands chose for confirmation in 2014 in Veselí nad Moravou. Roman Catholic Parish of Veselí nad Moravou belongs to the Olomouc archdiocese. The town belongs to the Hodonín district, which is a district with the highest level of religiosity in the South Moravian Region and district with the highest level of religiosity in the whole Czech Republic. Most respondents chosen their confirmation name by the saint, which is his/her paragon (64.7 %). There dominates honorific function in confirmation names. The aesthetic function is considerable too. Application of the family function seems to be unusual. Although there is a considerable number of confirmands who chose their name themselves, an important factor was the opinion of relatives or close persons. The media played the lesser role. When choosing their name, confirmands were most influenced by life of their confirmation patrons.

The aim of the paper is to characterise the confirmation names used by the inhabitants of Moravany nad Váhom, Hubina, Ducové, Banka in western Slovakia, which formed the parish of Moravany nad Váhom in the second half of the 19th century. The confirmation names of people coming originally from other places but confirmed in Moravany nad Váhom in that period are also included in this study. The confirmation names do not match the Christian baptism names of the given persons. The assumption that most confirmation names were motivated by the names of the confirmation parents has not been documented. The confirmation in 1897 was specific as the priest might have played an important role in choosing confirmation names.
