In mysticism, I am mostly interested in emanations of some type of intensity of existence, which abstracts from the biological one. Revoking a treaty with time results in a puzzling personal experience, the story of which can be treated as an existential lesson. In mysticism, the truth becomes known through faith. It finds its source in love, which is the soul’s response for the salutary love of God directed at it. As a refusal of the demands of human nature, mysticism offers an entrance into the realm of the spirit and transcendence. The latter is approached by man through a sacrifice of love, which cleanses him of the ontological stain and guilt. The first stage of this peregrination is purification. It is an act of conscience stimulated by the vision of Christ’s passion, foreseeing death and inevitable Judgement. Purification is an encouragement for contrition and responsibility going beyond the temporal limits. In the second stage of the journey to God (illumination), a prayer for grace of life under the aegis of the cross substitutes the lament over oneself. It will be a life of humility, contemplation and doloristic imitation, crowned with love understood as following the intention of God.

Synthesizing Thomism and phenomenology, this paper compares the kind of reflective thinking and willing that goes on in penitential acts to Edmund Husserl’s method of the phenomenological εποχή (epoche). Analyzing penance up through the act of contrition, it first shows it to have three primary acts: (1) the examination of conscience, (2) the reordering of the will and (3) the resolve not to sin again in regret. After presenting this Thomistic conception of contrition in detail, it then focuses on the essence of Husserl’s εποχή as a method intended to “suspend” certain beliefs in order to discover the truth about knowledge. In conclusion, it shows that a particular form of the εποχή—a penitential εποχή—must be employed in these three penitential acts so that a disposition of grace may be made present in the penitent.

This paper aims to expose the doctrine on indulgences, its historical evolution, current legislation and actual influence on the life of the Church. The author highlights how the indulgences are useful to the spiritual life of the Christian faithful: they help in the fight against sin and evil forces, they stimulate to charity and they offer a valuable assistance to our deceased brothers and sisters; they awaken the hope of full reconciliation with God the Father; they strengthen the hierarchical communion of the faithful and pastors, and especially with the Vicar of Christ; they contribute so that the Church presents herself as holy and immaculate, united in Christ with the bond of charity.
