Guidance can be considered on a broad continuum - from the daily activities of friendly people to specialised institutional activities. If we call guidance a practical activity related to providing help, counseling is called a scientific discipline, the theory of guidance. The article presents the history of the formation of counseling and the paradigms, currents and theoretical concepts and counseling as a scientific discipline. Attempts to describe this process can be made from various theoretical and methodological positions, using regularities taken from various scientific disciplines.

The article presented here is a result of a trio of opinions that arose during the period encompassing the Zakopane Conference on Adult Education (April 2011) and the Summer School for Young Researchers on Adult Education and Counselling (May 2011). Within the range of these scholarly events the authoresses tried to share their experiences on educating would-be consellors at the University of Zielona Góra. The resulting text is an attempt to describe over a dozen years of the authoresses’ experience in running didactic classes outside the university walls and driving traditional workshops out of lecture halls and into the space of a large city. Therefore, on the one hand, the authoresses make a brief presentation of their projects, while, on the other, subject them to academic reflection referring to the areas of professionalism and constructivism as understood nowadays. The article reveals changes in thinking about counsellors’ professional competencies, which may be observed both in practitioners’ statements and counselling reflection. The authoresses show educational possibilities provided by the use of performative etnography, and try to present the elaborate process in which counsellors can become reflective researchers of their own practice.

The article aims to portray changes in provision and reception of contemporary counselling, which finds itself under a strong impact of popular culture. The pop culture is described as a phenomenon intimately related and saturating social life, scientific research and daily life of modern people. In postmodern mediatized reality, deeply immersed in popular culture, the guidance is sought by a Homo consultans-a reflexive individual that experiences uncertainty/helplessness and establishes an interpersonal relationship (dialogue) with another human being-a counsellor-with a view to solving his/her problems. Seeking guidance and attempting to use the counsellor’s help to understand oneself, others and the world, the counselee actually strives after sustainable personal development and decent life. Homo consultans-is simultaneously the active seeker of a guidance and the passive object of the attack of guidance practices.

In this study we concentrate on the reasons for the focus on the therapeutical potential of philosophy in the current period. Among the key causes of the renewed and growing interest in the therapeutical perception of philosophy we give special weight to opportunities stemming from the development of interdisciplinarity and the ever-closer relations of philosophy with certain therapeutical approaches, as well as the confrontation of philosophy with socio-economic and utilitarian pressures in society and the problematising of the task and justification of philosophy in the context of other scientific enterprises. In the study we attempt to indicate some therapeutical aspects of philosophy and philosophising (such as the satisfying function of knowledge, the satisfying aspect of caring about and sharing problems with others, together with the need for the practical application of the findings and the practical aspect of wisdom), which predispose philosophy to the development of its therapeutical potential of philosophy as therapy by thought.

The contribution deals with the overwhelming position of Career Guidance being the counterpart of the strategy of lifelong learning in Europe. This strategically new position of Career Guidance leads to a new underlying theory of how the individual is being conceptualized. Therefore the individual has to adapt to the needs of the performance-oriented society. The history of Career Guidance in educational science, actual theories and newer research outcomes of different counselling settings are discussed which show institutional and individual effects of defense and denial of the reforms. The main thesis is that a theory of Career Guidance - in reference to the concept of lifelong learning - must be rooted in humanism and stress the existential needs of the individual in unsafe economic times.

In the article the Author presented the examples of employing constructivism in the analyses of social activities (in pedeutology and theory of organization) and she attempts to consider the direction of changes to counselling practice and theory in the context of a constructivist perspective. Constructivism is treated as a theoretical perspective, giving strong legitimacy to the new counsellor and the counselling activity itself. Counselling is demonstrated to be a social activity, which changes from an activity forcing a model of social reality and personal biography of the participant (counselling activity undertaken by the modernistic adviser) into being the practice allowing him or her to create and reconstruct the knowledge, to construct their own biography (counselling activity undertaken by the constructivist counsellor).

Zmiany te przebiegały w czasie przekształceń politycznych, ekonomicznych, społecznych i kulturowych w naszym kraju.

The article presents the development of counsellogy – studies of counselling. It shows that the 34-year history of this discipline has undergone changes not only in the research subject, but also in the research methodology. These changes occurred during political, economic, social and cultural transformations in Poland. This was reflected in the attitude of authorities towards counselling, in the changes in expectations of its clients and in the work of counsellors. Since the aim of the article is to demonstrate the development of the discipline, and not to describe the practice, it relates to the changes that occurred in the research methodology at that time. The article is divided according to the emergence of subsequent paradigms: neo-positivist, humanist, critical and postmodern, and presents the state of contemporary counsellogy research. The unpredictability of time perspectives of changes occurring in counselling and its contexts, and in overlapping of paradigms in the approach to the subject of research are called the “dance of time”.

This article contains considerations on counselling in the context of how it is situated within ethical and deontological standards. The theoretical concept is an attempt to show the combination of ethics and deontology in the counselling proceedings. For this purpose the authors refer to the specific code of conduct intended for supportive proceedings determined by axiological ethics, normative ethics and deontological issues in their broadest sense, which concerns the liability towards the supported individual. To make the discussion implementable the authors also refer to the practice of counselling intervention as something integrated with ethical proceedings. Therefore, the considerations included herein show that no sort of activity within the area of help and social support can be independent of axiology. This is because each counsellor who establishes a specific relationship with the supported person enters the ethical space being more or less aware of this fact.

This article addresses the issue of the competence of counsellors working with people experiencing sexual violence. The theoretical part of the article describes the basic concepts related to institutional (professional) counselling and describes a professional counsellor and his/her competences in a descriptive way. The subject of the research includes the competences of counsellors in the field of working with people who have experienced sexual violence. The purpose of the study was determining and describing their competences – both organizational and professional ones – from the perspective of the experience of individual listeners preparing for counselling work. The study uses a narrative method with content analysis. The research problem took the form of the following question: what are the competences of a counsellor in accompanying a sexually abused person from the perspective of the personal experience of future counsellors? The research was conducted in 2019 among 23 postgraduate students preparing for counselling work. The results made it possible to select subcategories within the examined categories that show the specificity and value of the competences described by the respondents, and allowed us to emphasize the importance of the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills of counsellors. In addition, the conclusions of the study are valuable for pedagogical practice, especially in terms of enriching the offer of studies addressed to counsellors working with people who have experienced sexual violence.

PIB is a research project pertaining to the psychotherapeutic potential of Lego bricks. This is based on Lego Group’s own method called Lego Seriousplay and Eric Berne's transactional analysis as a theoretical background. If we see it from the Lego’s aspect, our plan is a training like LSP. It is only alike because of the special application. We made a lot of modifications according to the original methodology. In this document we would like to present details of our research we have been working on for almost two years. The characteristics of our methodology will be illustrated, too.

An active collaboration with teachers is a prerequisite of system based approach to school counselling. The objective of the research was examining the experiences of school counsellors regarding collaboration with teachers in the domain of student counselling in the school setting in Serbia. This research applied a pragmatist qualitative approach using a semi-structured interview. Participants were 81 elementary school counsellors (pedagogues). The results show that teachers are generally open for collaboration during student counselling. Teachers’ acceptance of advice depends on their personality and classroom management style. Conclusions offer recommendations for improving the partnership relations as a basis for effective student counselling.

The analysis of online discussions in Internet forums creates an opportunity to capture traces of collective and individual memory as evidence of affiliation to a specific community. In the paper, the starting point for the analysis is the counselling discourse conducted in specialisedlegal issues in Polish and German Internet forums. One of the elements of traditional face-to-face counselling discourse is the closeness and trust between the counsellor/expert and the person who is asking for advice. Nonetheless, in the case of mediation, the stock of knowledge on the Internet and the ongoing anonymisation of online counselling, it is possible to notice that discourse participants attempt to replace such traditional closeness by referring to their common cultural or historical background of the past. The presented conclusions from the contrasting Polish-German perspective allow an assessment as to what extent the cultural memory of a given community created online is able to replace the traditional closeness and trust in the process of giving advice.

In the article the author shares her experience in research on counselling practices of virtual communities. The aim of the study was to understand the world of online communities, especially in relation to the advisory aspects. The author is interested in counselling, which in the age of the Internet has become public and personal experience. This text is not a presentation of research results. The author focused her attention on the research process, not on the final result. The specificity of the research was to agree with the perspective of the participant engaged in the virtual community and ethnographic description of the observed situation. Methodological inspiration for the author became the “emic” strategy by Kenneth Lee Pike. The “emic” studies emphasize the inner aspect of culture, the language, the participant’s perspective of culture. The adoption of such a research perspective has led the author to reflect on the difference between ethnography in the traditional sense and ethnography in the “emic” strategy. “Emic” strategy introduces some changes – the researcher is a member of the culture, his presence does not affect the others, he knows a lot more about the test culture, researcher is emotionally involved. The text ends with two diagrams showing the differences in the stages of research processes. The classical ethnographic research includes the following steps: 1) research plan, 2) entry into the research community, 3) observation, analysis, interpretation, description, 4) output from the research community. The author draws attention to the differences that are introduced by the “emic” strategy: 1) being a member of the community, 2) inspiration event, 3) the emergence of a research plan, 4) observation, analysis, interpretation, description, 5) will remain in the community.

Counsellogy is a young science of counseling. Following the chronology of the events involved, the article retraces the various avenues taken in the process of its emergence and development. Disciplinary, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary avenues are listed, and some findings established through these approaches are cited. Revolving around these methodological orientations, the argument captures both the distinctiveness of counselling and guidance (i.e. the counsellogical research object) and its multiple connections with other areas of personal and social life as studied by (mainly) Polish researchers.

Badania realizowane były z zastosowaniem strategii jakościowej i techniki analizy treści. Do badań wybrano newsletter pt. Listy w butelce, a analizie poddano 30 listów, wysyłanych do czytelniczek w 2016 r.

This article is an attempt to look at newsletters as a specific counselling offer. The main purpose was to present the effect of subjective insight into the newsletter content in order to determine their advisory character. The research was focused on determining how (using what?) the newsletter itself can become a consulting offer and what kind of guidance content can be identified in newsletters. The research was carried out using a quality strategy and content analysis technique. The “Letter in the bottle” newsletter was selected for the research and 30 letters (sent from January to December 2016) were analysed. On the basis of the conducted analysis, two basic ways of providing counselling in newsletters were distinguished: 1) literal (understood as advice, specific tips given by the author of the newsletter) and 2) non-literal (inspirations encouraging change in a metaphorical way). The councils were implemented in the following forms: quasi-motivation, mini-education and information transfer. Inspiration is the introduction of metaphorical comparisons; reference to “products”; quoting stories from life and asking questions (no answer).
