Neighbourhood as a Cultural and Social IssueThe neighbourhood is a broad category, which is present throughout sociological and cultural research. Of course, articles of the latest issue of "Colloquia Humanistica" do not exhaust the problem. However, we present crucial texts that relate to rarely undertaken issues, some of which might even be considered pioneering. We hope that they will be inspiring for researchers who are interested in the humanities and cultural studies, and once again we are pleased that we have been able to create an issue that is not merely declaratively, but truly interdisciplinary, and yet consistent. We try to present an understanding of the neighbourhood that emerges from the presented texts. The connotation they are most concerned with is that of exchange and opening, of contact, which is based on upholding the borders of one’s group – and of oneself, one’s own space, but at the same time, on opening to other people and the need for communication during which communities and people define themselves. The neighbourhood and contact are also the basis for the exchange processes, the thwarting of which can lead to the most dangerous phenomena for the functioning of societies. Sąsiedztwo jako problem społeczny i kulturowySąsiedztwo jest szeroką kategorią, obecną w badaniach socjologicznych i kulturowych. Artykuły najnowszego numeru „Colloquia Hmanistica“ oczywiście nie wyczerpują zagadnienia. Przedstawiamy jednak bardzo istotne teksty, które odnoszą się do zagadnień rzadko podejmowanych i czasem wręcz pionierskich, jak w przypadku artykułów Olimpii Dragouni i Kamila Wieleckiego. Mamy nadzieję, że będą one inspirujące dla badaczy związanych z humanistyką i kulturoznawstwem, i po raz kolejny cieszymy się, że udało nam się stworzyć numer nie tylko deklaratywnie, lecz rzeczywiście interdyscyplinarny, a jednocześnie spójny.Spróbujmy przedstawić rozumienie sąsiedztwa wynikające z zaprezentowanych tekstów. Zwróćmy uwagę przede wszystkim na konotację wymiany i otwarcia, kontaktu, który z jednej strony opiera się na zachowaniu granicy grupy – jednostki, jej przestrzeni własnej, z drugiej zaś na otwarciu na innego i konieczności komunikacji, podczas której wspólnoty i osoby definiują się. Sąsiedztwo i kontakt stanowią też podstawę dla procesów wymiany, a ich uniemożliwienie prowadzi do zjawisk najgroźniejszych dla funkcjonowania społeczeństw.

The author discusses the question of diplomatic contacts between Western Africans and Portugal in the second half of the 15th century. They were preceded by voluntary visits of free Africans to Portugal, which was followed by the organisation of several legations in Benin and Wolof states (Jolof and Cayor). These events had an impact on the Portuguese-African contacts, despite being occasional. Analysing the course of negotiations, accompanying ceremonials, political propaganda tools and the outcome of the talks, the author attempts to present and evaluate the political goals of both sides, the possibilities of Christianisation and the influence that these events had on the relations between people from different cultures and on their mentalities.

Artykuł wpisuje się w myślenie o antropologicznej rzeczywistości terenowej w jej interakcyjnym charakterze ustrukturowanym m.in. przez kształt kontaktu kulturowego. Zestawienie wiedzy zawartej w Dziełach Bronisława Malinowskiego ze szczegółowymi informacjami z dzienników, notatek terenowych i listów pozwoliło na opisanie zarówno wzoru idealnego, jak i zbliżenie się do wzoru rzeczywistego relacji, jaka wykształciła się między antropologiem a tubylcami. Pytanie tylko, w jaki sposób konfrontacja kilku systemów praktyk i wyobrażeń wpłynęła na proces badawczy i kształt antropologicznej wiedzy? Wychodząc od analizy tendencji współczesnej antropologii do dyskursywizacji problematyki spotkania, autor stara się prześledzić różne aspekty antropologicznego kontaktu kulturowego Bronisława Malinowskiego z Massimami, co ma pomóc we wskazaniu najważniejszych kulturowych i historycznych uwarunkowań kształtu relacji pomiędzy antropologiem a „jego ludem”.

The article fits into thinking about the fieldwork’s reality in its interactive nature, structured by, among others, the form of the cultural contact. Bringing together the knowledge collected in Bronisław Malinowski’s Dzieła and detailed information gathered in diaries, fieldwork notes and letters, allows to perform a reconstruction of an ideal pattern, approximate to real pattern, of the relation which was born between the anthropologist and the natives. The question is, how did the confrontation of multiple systems of praxis and beliefs affect the research and nature of anthropological knowledge? Beginning with the analysis of the meeting subject discourse present in modern anthropology, the author tires to investigate various aspects of Bronislaw Malinowski fieldwork. He attempts to construct an analysis which would pinpoint cultural and historical conditionings of the nature of relation between the anthropologist and “his people”.

Heart of Darkness – Heart of Redness: Heartache and Pain in two Commonwealth Novels

Our study is conceived as a comparative analysis of Zakes Mda’s postcolonial and postmodern novel The Heart of Redness and Joseph Conrad’s canonical and colonial novella Heart of Darkness, from the viewpoint of a literarily encoded anthropology of the body. In both texts, body marks and body pain are prominent and recurrent motives, carrying along important cultural meanings, related to several classic themes of colonial and postcolonial literature: the birth and becoming of cultural identity and awareness, culture shock, cultural contacts, enculturation versus deculturation, and cultural memory, as a vehicle and repository of myths, history and (body) image stereotypes.

Chociaż etnologia i misjologia w swoich początkach naukowych były z sobą w różnoraki sposób powiązane, obecne relacje między tymi dwoma dyscyplinami są ambiwaletne, głównie z perspektywy etnologii. Wychodząc z takiego założenia, niniejszy przyczynek próbuje zarysować przyczyny tego sceptycznego postrzegania chrześcijańskiej misji i misjologii. Zarówno jednak pracę etnologa i misjologa czy misjonarza — tę naukową, jak i praktyczną w terenie — cechuje podobna sytuacja wyjściowa i metodologia, mianowicie „spotkanie z innym” i „tłumaczenie” tego, co jest kulturowo obce, a co własne. Na przykładzie powstałego w latach sześćdziesiątych XX wieku Kościoła katolicko- autochtonicznego w ekwadorskiej i peruwiańskiej Amazonii artykuł przedstawia specyficzny rozwój tamtejszej ewangelizacji. Wskazuje przy tym na paralelne zadania oraz wyzwania etnologa i misjonarza lub etnologii i misjologii.

Although anthropology and missiology have been interlinked with each other since their beginnings as academic disciplines, the present relation between both is ambiguous – especially from an anthropological perspective. The paper aims to elucidate the reasons for this rather sceptic perception of Christian mission and missiology. At the same time, the work of anthropologists and missionaries or missiologists – both at the university and in the field – have various similarities and challenges in common. They start from a comparable situation and methodology, i.e. the encounter with “the other” and the mutual translation between the cultural “own” and the cultural “foreign.” On the example of the “Catholic Autochthonous Church” in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon, the article discusses the evolution of the Catholic mission in this region since the 1960s. It illustrates the analogies and differences in the anthropologists’ and missionaries’ approach to the indigenous “other” and reflects on the challenge of cultural translation.
