The article addresses the problems of the sources of the expansion of European civilization. They are essential to understand why it were the Europeans who managed to impose their civilization on the whole world, although other cultural circles, such as the Empire of the Steppes, China or the Islamic world, were equally able to do so. The answer involves a set of factors specific to Europe and non-existent in the same configuration elsewhere; the factors include geographic diversity, political pluralism and free trade, military revolution, transoceanic shipping and accumulation of capital, science, technology and printing, ship and rational explorer.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę źródeł ekspansji cywilizacji europejskiej. Jest to istotne dla zrozumienia, dlaczego to właśnie Europejczykom udało się narzucić swoją cywilizację całemu światu, choć przecież w równym stopniu mogły to uczynić inne kręgi kulturowe, jak choćby Imperium Wielkiego Stepu, Chiny czy świat islamu. W odpowiedzi uwzględniono zestaw czynników specyficznych dla Europy i nigdzie indziej niewystępujących w tej konfiguracji, takich jak: zróżnicowanie geograficzne, pluralizm polityczny i wolny handel, rewolucja militarna, transoceaniczna żegluga i akumulacja kapitału, nauka technika i druk, okręt i racjonalny odkrywca.

In his article, Zygmunt Kłodnicki defines the boundaries of cultural regions and the paths of expansion of chosen products representative of the nautical culture of Austronesia. Kłodnicki examines the conditions for the development of shipping in this area and emphasizes the importance of the geographical environment in this process. Specifically, he draws attention to the importance of rafts in the migration of Austronesians and points out that boats equipped with a stabilizer, known as outrigger canoes, can be considered the differentia specifica of the Austronesian culture from the moment they left Southeast Asia. On the basis of his analysis of the diversity of the structure of the stabilizing device, boat equipment, and sailing terminology, Kłodnicki identifies the paths of cultural expansion in Austronesia. Maps relating to outrigger canoes and the cultural regionalization of the area in question are an integral part of the article.

Artykuł stanowi próbę określenia granic regionów kulturowych i dróg ekspansji niektórych wytworów z zakresu kultury nautycznej w Autronezji. Autor rozpatruje warunki rozwoju żeglugi na tym obszarze i podkreśla istotną rolę w tym procesie środowiska geograficznego. Zawraca uwagę na znaczenie tratew w migracjach Austronezyjczyków. Wskazuje, że łodzie z urządzeniem statecznicowym można uznać za differentia specifica kultury Austronezyjczyków od momentu opuszczenia przez nich południowo-wschodniej Azji. Na podstawie analizy zróżnicowania budowy urządzenia statecznicowego, wyposażenia łodzi i terminologii żeglarskiej autor określa drogi ekspansji kulturowej w Austronezji. Integralną część artykułu stanowią mapy dotyczące łodzi z urządzeniem statecznicowym i regionalizacji kulturowej omawianego obszaru.
