Health resort Piešťany is an original and specific place. It has for a long time been a multicultural urban space, where the spa guests (bearers of their own cultures) meet the local inhabitants (bearers of the autochthonous culture). Together they create a society of the spa resort that, in spite of being in many respects indifferentiated or even contrasting, in general functions synchronously. The reason is the common adaptation strategy – the culture of the health resort. In the memory and identity of the town, the intense and dynamic sociocultural changes remain present in various ways (from artefacts through socionormatives to ideas). Among the most important belong the cultural landscape, architecture and urbanism, specific stratification of local inhabitants, as well as of the clients. Through historiographical and ethnocultural description it is possible to trace the changes and to identify factors that caused them.

Artykuł poświęcony jest jednemu z wymiarów stratyfikacji kultury, jakim jest oglądanie seriali telewizyjnych. Opierając się na danych z badania zrealizowanego w 2019 roku na próbie ogólnopolskiej chcemy ustalić, w jakim stopniu ten sposób spędzania czasu wolnego związany jest z pozycją klasową. Okazuje się, że oglądanie seriali niezbyt silnie zależy od pozycji klasowej, jeżeli kontrolowane są inne czynniki. Ani częstość oglądania, ani rodzaje, ani stopień złożoności seriali nie wchodzą w istotne zależności z usytuowaniem w hierarchii społecznej utożsamianej z pozycją rynkową i stosunkiem do szeroko rozumianej własności. Natomiast ważnymi zmiennymi wyjaśniającymi okazują się inne cechy związane z pozycją klasową. Są to wykształcenie respondentów i pochodzenie społeczne. Zgodnie z oczekiwaniami wyższe wykształcenie respondentów i matek zwiększa szanse oglądania seriali zaliczanych do „wyższej” kultury, podczas gdy oglądanie seriali o niższej złożoności związane jest z niższym kapitałem edukacyjnym. Sugerowałoby to, że oglądanie seriali może sprzyjać odtwarzaniu się podziałów klasowych.

This article focuses on the stratification in viewing TV shows as a factor affecting cultural distances between social classes. Based on the research conducted in 2019 in Poland, we investigate the extent to which the patterns of watching TV series are linked to class position. The article demonstrates that viewing TV series rather weakly depends on social class membership, net of other variables taken into account. Neither the time spent in watching, nor the type or quality of TV series appear to be significantly linked to social class defined in terms of property ownership and market position. Yet, other constitutive factors of class structure such as education and cultural capital of parents turn out to be significant. As expected, the higher education of the respondents and their mothers increases the chances for watching the more ‘ambitions’ TV series, while watching the shows of lesser complexity is characteristic of the respondents with lower educational capital. In sum, our findings suggest that this type of cultural activity contributes to the reproduction of the social class distances.

We attempt to show how class position, cultural capital, and social class of parents affects parenting patterns. The findings are based on data from a nationwide survey conducted in 2019. Our analysis shows that having higher cultural capital in terms of going to the opera, philharmonic hall, as well as playing sports or eating at restaurants favours reading books to children, going to the theatre with them, and going to classical music concerts. In a similar direction affect education and class position of the parents: an increase in education and originating from specialists (intelligentsia) are associated with some increase in these parenting practices. A comparison of both parents' activities shows a slightly greater role for mothers than for fathers with respect to reading books and educating children, although fathers are not inferior to mothers in going with their children to the theatre and music concerts. These findings may be seen as an element of the reproduction of class barriers due to the transmission of cultural practices to children that affect their life chances. They also support hypothesis of homology, that is, similarity in the patterns of relationships between class position and childrearing practices.

Przedmiotem analizy jest oddziaływanie pozycji klasowej, kapitału kulturowego i innych cech położenia społecznego rodziców na wzory wychowywania dzieci. Podstawą ustaleń są dane z ogólnopolskiego badania zrealizowanego w 2019 r. Z naszej analizy wynika, że posiadanie wyższego kapitału kulturowego w sensie chodzenia do opery, filharmonii, a także uprawiania sportu lub jedzenia w restauracji sprzyja czytaniu dzieciom książek, chodzeniu z nimi do teatru i na koncerty muzyki poważnej. W tym samym kierunku oddziałuje poziom wykształcenia i pochodzenie społeczne rodziców: wzrost wykształcenia i posiadanie ojca inteligenta związane są z częstszym stosowaniem tych praktyk wychowawczych. Z kolei, porównanie aktywności obojga rodziców wskazuje na nieco większą rolę matek niż ojców w odniesieniu do czytania książek i edukacji dzieci, chociaż ojcowie nie ustępują wyraźnie matkom w chodzeniu z dziećmi do teatru i na koncerty muzyczne. Ustalenia te można traktować jako jeden z elementów odtwarzania się dystansów społecznych ze względu na przekazywanie dzieciom wartości, które rzutują na ich szanse życiowe. Przemawiają one również za występowaniem homologii, czyli podobieństwa we wzorach oddziaływania pozycji klasowej na praktyki wychowawcze w wymienionych aspektach.
