The article aims to present an alternative “nest approach” in teaching Polish word-formation processes while introducing prefixal verbs in lessons of Polish as a foreign language at an advanced level. This ap-proach has some advantages in comparison with a traditional ap-proach which consists in assigning certain meanings to particular prefixes in their combination with selected verbs. Some shortcomings and restrictions which can be avoided while adopting the nest word-formation approach are also mentioned and analysed in the article.

Czaisz to? (Do you get it?) On various uses of the verb czaić and its prefixed derivatives This article discusses the semantics of the verb czaić and its prefixed derivatives: doczaić, obczaić, podczaić, przeczaić, przyczaić, rozczaić, sczaić, wyczaić, zaczaić. Particular attention is paid to morphological, syntactic and semantic properties that influence their stability and expressive markedness. Although these verbs are not a novelty in Polish, lexicographic accounts of their use are infrequent. These verbs can be traced back to language used by the youth, yet they have already made their way to everyday Polish. Polish speakers use them mainly in unofficial conversations, in which these verbs can be found in various contexts; and exhibit numerous meanings, some of which are not listed in contemporary dictionaries of Polish. Subtle meaning differences between relevant derivatives are encoded by the prefixes that attach to the base – czaić.
