The following work pertains to one of the forms of cultural tourism, called dark tourism. The term "dark tourism" is translated into Polish as "ciemna, mroczna turystyka" and describes a phenomenon that involves travelling to places connected with death, human suffering and various tragedies. The aim of this paper is to differentiate the factors that influence the development of dark tourism. The article discusses some aspects of dark tourism, such as the history and development of dark tourism, the problem of terminology used to describe trips to places linked with death, motives of “dark” tourists and issues related to the supply of dark tourism. In addition, the article discusses the problem of dark tourism’s potential to develop in Poland – both elements conducive to this process, as well as barriers to its development in this country.
