In the article, I present deliberations on the theme of the rhetorical category of appropriateness in the context of its original sources and contemporary media practice. Upon presenting the theory formed in line with the understanding developed in antiquity, I accept as a functional division for the purpose of the discussion the prépon/aptum (decorum) division, i.e. into the historical and literary notion, and appropriateness as a general principle of rhetorical communication to subsequently present a discussion organised on the basis of three theses: 1) The major factor defining the rhetorical model of appropriateness is the mass nature of media communication in the presence of freedom of speech, a democratic system of authority, and economic liberalism; 2) The on-going presence of disputes regarding the appropriateness of public behaviour is a manifestation not as much of its norm-building potential as of the functional approach – of senders, participants of the reported events, and message receivers – towards media communication, which inevitably results in a distinct over-representation of messages the content of which applies to the manifestations of inappropriateness; 3) The appropriateness principle is associated with the difficult task for the receiver to understand her/his role in the world of the media, and its various consequences. I posit that the principle does, in fact, indicate certain criteria which can become a basis for classifying specific messages as those which do or do not meet the requirements of rhetorical tact, yet it does not enable one to define an a priori applicable borderline between appropriateness and inappropriateness in contemporary media. Therefore, it seems that the settlement of any doubts and dilemmas associated with appropriateness ought to be founded on a good upbringing-based social stance and a system of values, i.e. maturity achieved regardless of the influence of the media.

The essay is an analysis of the so-called „framework” elements in Kochanowski's "Laments" (including the title, dedication, "Epitaph for Hanna Kochanowska"), and metapoetic fragments of the mourning cycle, particularly where the poet refers to the contemporary judgements about the status of poetry and the poet. The author concludes that the author of "Laments" in the late stage of his work not only greatly modified his views on theoretical issues in the art of poetry (because he even contradicts in "Laments" some of his opinions expressed in the previously written poetic manifesto – "The Muse"), but also offered his contemporaries and posterity, more subjective interpretation of the principle of appropriateness ('decorum'), held in a spirit of modernity and in search for new poetic solutions.

This essay probes Miłosz’s attitude to confessional poetry, or rather it examines his stance on confessionalism as a seemingly irremovable element of any poetic utterance. By means of such terms as decorum, the referentiality of poetic language and its usefulness, it demonstrates why Miłosz himself refrained from overtly confessional modes of poetic utterance, drawing too heavily on the poet’s own experiences, which may in turn result in blurred distinctions between biography and literature. One of the reasons why the poet so intensely disliked excessive confessionalism is its intention to describe the speaker’s emotions, while according to the Polish poet, the main task of poetry is to celebrate the dazzling beauty of the outside world, whose existence transcends and surpasses the insignifi cantly small inner world of a troubled psyche. Last but not least, the usefulness of poetry, as Miłosz understood it, is that which enables poems written in diverse countries and epochs to intensify the contemporary reader’s sense of belonging to the large family of the human race.

The political entanglements of education make it an engaged practice as it determines the scope of epistemic, ontological, civilisational, and cultural issues. A significant role in this respect is played by the language of education, which triggers “role enactment.” These two concepts are supposed to reduce cognitive dissonance and ontological discomfort. They also lead to the “blending” of the individual with the socio-political system. The concepts of language and “role enactment” form the most important element of the power-ideology-education triad.

Te dwie kategorie w konsekwencji mają redukować dysonans poznawczy i dyskomfort ontologiczny.

Based on her own research, the author analyses some modern health rituals observed in the Roman-Catholic Church in Poland. In the times of thriving biomedicine, it is surprising how extremely popular the religious attitude is, manifested not only through traditional religious practices, but also presented in new texts about religious and pro-health behaviour, propagated by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal groups. It may result from the fact that in the religious discourse, healing is something more than modern medicine has to offer. It is a religious experience, an experience of the sacrum, lived through individually and collectively at the same time (analysed, remembered and publicly recreated through stories about healing, spread in the community).
