The object of the consideration taken up in the article is democratic education. Introduced in the Summerhill pioneer school is still not faithfully refl ected in Poland. Over the past decade, several institutions based on ideas taken from the British school have been created. Their creation is an expression of the need to create a place where children could be educated in accordance with their own interests, in the atmosphere conducive to the development of innate predispositions. The aim of the article is to present the meaning the democratic education concept in contemporary pedagogical practice. The reader will find here a description of the theoretical and practical assumptions of the “O!mega” Poznań democratic school with reference to the concept of the Summerhill school known in research on education.

Rozwijanie u ucznia samodzielności to ważny aspekt wychowawczy. Celem badań było poznanie poziomu gotowości do niej u dzieci pracujących systemem edukacji tradycyjnej i alternatywnej – uczniów szkoły demokratycznej. Dane empiryczne zebrano za pomocą metody epizodów i metody behawioralnej. Wykorzystano schedułę obserwacyjną i test niedokończonych historyjek. Stwierdzono, iż poziom działaniowy gotowości do samodzielności w kontekście prospołecznym jest wyższy w grupie badanych dzieci ze szkoły demokratycznej.

Developing a student’s self-reliance is an important educational aspect. The research was aimed at knowing the level of readiness for children in the traditional and alternative education system – students of a democratic school. Empirical data were collected using the method of episodes and behavioral methods. An observation schedule and a test of unfinished stories were used. The results of research indicate that the operational level of readiness for self-reliance in a pro-social context is higher in the group of children from democratic school studied.
