Allergic rhinitis, or inflammation of the nasal mucosa, characterized by nasal discharge and its trickling down the back wall of the throat, as well as other symptoms (nasal congestion making breathing difficult and causing sleep problems, paroxysmal sneezing, itching and tearing of the conjunctiva) is a very common condition in the population. Many patients seek advice from doctors and pharmacists because of these complaints. Desloratadine is one of the most commonly used 2nd generation antihistamines. It is an oral, long-acting, non-sedative histamine H1 receptor antagonist that inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells. As an effective and safe drug, desloratadine is registered for the treatment of seasonal and chronic allergic rhinitis. In many cases, it is beneficial to combine desloratadine with intranasal corticosteroid. Side effects with desloratadine are rare and most are mild.
