The author ponders over such an issue as functioning of stereotypes in cross-cultural communication. Stereotype is defined here as a constant and recurring image of objects, actions, states, qualities, events and processes, within the limits of a particular social group or in the area of human activity. This definition also encompasses motor and/or cognitive (intellectual) reflexes which are conditioned on the image mentioned. The author presents the problem of stereotypes in the light of cultivation theory and the spiral of silence theory, as well as from the perspective of conceptualisation theory: stereotypes are placed on an indirect and basic level of conceptualisation which is typical of common human activities. A special part in the article is occupied by a notion of behaviour egocentrism in cross-cultural communication. The author distinguishes three types of cross-cultural situations: under conditions of subjects’ egocentrism, strong subjects’ egocentrism, and cooperation among subjects.
