The dialectal material database for the Dictionary of the Czech Language Dialects contains many expressions thus far not recorded in dictionaries. It is often only possible to assign them to a lexical item after a thorough dialectological and etymological analysis has been carried out. This is the case of the words bur, burák, burášek, ořech and oříšek denoting a kind of punishment or torture, involving the process of quickly grazing the back of someone else’s neck in an upward direction with the knuckles. The paper shows their usage in the Czech dialects, addresses their motivation in the Czech lexicon, and explains their origin.
