The purpose of this article is to present con­siderations on the relationship between the digital economy and the functioning and development of enterprises. The features of the digital economy were discussed, and the manifestations of digitalization of enterpris­es under the influence of the digital economy were indicated. Digital economy and digital society index in Poland was assessed against the average values for the EU countries. Un­fortunately, this evaluation confirmed the very low level of the digital economy index for Poland. The article also discusses the use of a variety of information and communi­cation technologies in enterprises, fostering the functioning, development and raising the level of their competitiveness. It also in­dicated a very low level of digital intensity of enterprises in Poland.  It means that it is necessary to improve digital skills of employ­ees, to use ICT technologies more widely and to use them in practice of Polish enterprises functioning.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezento­wanie rozważań dotyczących powiązań go­spodarki cyfrowej z funkcjonowaniem i roz­wojem przedsiębiorstw. Omówiono cechy gospodarki cyfrowej, wskazano na przejawy cyfryzacji przedsiębiorstw pod wpływem gospodarki cyfrowej. Dokonano charakte­rystyki oraz oceny indeksu gospodarki cy­frowej i społeczeństwa cyfrowego w Polsce na tle przeciętnych wartości dla krajów Unii Europejskiej. Niestety ocena ta potwierdziła bardzo niski poziom indeksu gospodarki cy­frowej dla Polski. W artykule omówiono tak­że zastosowanie różnorodnych technologii informacyjno – komunikacyjnych w przed­siębiorstwach, sprzyjających funkcjonowa­niu, rozwojowi i podnoszeniu poziomu ich konkurencyjności. Wskazano również na bardzo niski poziom intensywności cyfrowej przedsiębiorstw w Polsce. Oznacza to, iż ko­niecznym się staje ciągłe doskonalenie umie­jętności cyfrowych pracowników, szersze zastosowanie technologii ICT oraz pełniejsze ich wykorzystanie w praktyce funkcjonowa­nia polskich przedsiębiorstw.
