Variability of Household Disposable Income Per Capita by Types of Residence in Poland

The dispersion of household disposable income per capita in each class of residence (i.e. six) was estimated for households in Poland. Then, the dispersion of income between the classes was analysed. The computation was carried out separately for subsequent years from 1998 to 2012. The study shows that the households in Poland are differentiated with regard to income per capita by types of residence, however, the differences within the groups are much bigger than the differences between the groups. What is particularly surprising, the share of between-group variance in total variance in the population under study was negligible small (just a few percent) compared to the share of the mean within-group variance (more than 90 percent).

W artykule określono stopień podobieństwa rozkładu dochodu rozporządzalnego na osobę w poszczególnych województwach Polski. Podobieństwo rozkładu zmierzono za pomocą metryki D, przy czym dwa rozkłady były tym bardziej podobne, czym D miało mniejszą wartość. W wyniku przeprowadzenia procedury klasyfikacji wyodrębniono dwie grupy jednoelementowe z województwami: mazowieckim i podkarpackim, jedną grupę czteroelementową z województwami: dolnośląskim, lubuskim, opolskim i śląskim oraz jedną grupę z pozostałymi dziesięcioma województwami. Dla każdej z czterech wyróżnionych klas obliczono średni dochód rozporządzalny per capita oraz ustalono wielkość rozrzutu wewnątrz grup. Następnie przeanalizowano rozrzut dochodu między grupami. W drodze zrealizowanego badania wskazano, że w strukturze wariancji obliczonej dla całej przebadanej próby tylko kilka procent stanowi wariancja międzygrupowa, a pozostałą część – czyli ponad dziewięćdziesiąt procent – średnia wariancja wewnątrzgrupowa. Pozwoliło to na sformułowanie ostatecznego wniosku, że przeciętne różnice między dochodami gospodarstw domowych znajdujących się wewnątrz zidentyfikowanych grup: A, B, C i D są dużo większe niż różnice między średnimi dochodami gospodarstw należących do różnych grup.

In the article the degree of similarity between distributions of disposable income per capita in Polish voivodships was determined. The similarity of distributions was measured by metric D and the more similar two distributions were, the smaller value the statistic D had. The classification procedure that was carried out resulted in forming two one-element groups – with the Mazovian voivodship and the Podkarpackie voivodship - one four-elements group with the Lower Silesian, Lubuskie, Opole, Silesian voivodships and one group with remaining ten voivodships. For each of the four separated classes the average disposable income per capita was calculated and the variability within groups was determined. Then the dispersion of income between groups was analysed. The study indicated that in the structure of variance calculated for the entire statistical sample examined the intergroup variance represents only a few percent, and the rest – that is, more than ninety percent – is the average intragroup variance. This allowed to formulate the final conclusion that the average differences in income between households belonging to identified groups A, B, C and D are much larger than the differences between the average values of income of households belonging to different groups.
