Writing the Road: On Drifting and Travelling-Seeing in Kenneth White’s Geopoetics

The article will offer a comparative reading of Kenneth White’s poetry, essays and travelogues/waybooks, with the focus on the issue of travelling, in particular the theme of drifting, the practice of writing-travelling and travelling-seeing (voyage-voyance). I will also try to demonstrate that there is a link between White’s theory of geopoetics and the practice of voyage-voyance in his writing. I will focus mainly on selected passages from the chapters of Travels in the Drifting Dawn and poems in which White discusses the issue of his writing-travelling and the process of self-realisation.

Współczesna epoka zmusza jednostkę do nieustannego poszukiwania swojej tożsamości. Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań o charakterze jakościowym prowadzone w oparciu o metodę biograficzną poprzez wywiad narracyjny z pięcioma niepijącymi alkoholiczkami (poszukiwaczkami tożsamości) oraz analizę treści ich biografii. Autorka prezentuje ich historie życia z okresu dzieciństwa, młodości w kontekście rozwoju choroby alkoholowej. Zaprezentowano fragmenty wyników badań, wątki znaczące dla zilustrowania specyfiki doświadczenia dryfowania. Na końcu zaprezentowane zostało porównanie stanu dryfowania ze stanem zawie- szenia opracowanego przez Agnieszkę Bron.

The modern age forces the individual to constantly search for their identity. The article presents results of a qualitative study using the biographic method carried out through a narrative interview of five women, non-drinking alcoholics (identitysearchers) and an analysis of their biographies. The author presents life stories of their childhood and adolescence in the context of alcoholism. It presents fragments of research results, important threads to illustrate the specifics of the drifting experience. At the end of the article, there is a comparison between the drifting with the floating in the concept of Agnieszka Bron.
