Willy Russell is an example of a writer whose popularity and critical reception is not extensively reflected in serious studies. There is a noticeable tendency to appraise rather than analyse Russell’s work. The aim of the present article is to dissect the function of drink images in the context of class-related issues Russell thematises in his plays.

The theme of drink in literature has been the focus of scholarly interest for a few decades, though much of it tends to concentrate on the writers’ lives more than literature per se, particularly in the studies concerning American literature. Criticism concerning British and Irish literature mostly discusses selected periods, the works of individual writers, or concentrates on regional literature, in this last case usually in the form of annotated anthologies. This article proposes a perspective whose focal point is the paradigm shift in the literary representation of drink, from the conviviality prevalent in pre-twentieth-century literature to the harrowing depictions of alcoholism in contemporary works.

Motyw alkoholu w literaturze od kilku już dekad znajduje się w kręgu zainteresowania badaczy, choć w dużej mierze koncentrują się oni na pisarzach, a nie literaturze jako takiej, szczególnie w opracowaniach dotyczących literatury amerykańskiej. W publikacjach dotyczących literatury brytyjskiej i irlandzkiej na ogół znajdziemy opracowania dotyczące wybranych okresów literackich, twórczości poszczególnych pisarzy, a nawet literatury regionalnej, często w formie antologii zawierających komentarz krytyczny. Prezentowany artykuł proponuje spojrzenie na zmieniający się paradygmat obrazowania alkoholu w literaturze, od poprzedzających literaturę dwudziestowieczną motywów radosnego upojenia do wstrząsających obrazów alkoholizmu w literaturze współczesnej.

The choice of vocabulary in the teaching and language learning process is one of the key problems of language didactics. Lexical competence and its development are perceived by teachers and students as a priority. What spot does semantic field regarding drinking beverages occupy in the French language school textbooks? What is, and what was, the selection of vocabulary related to this thematic circle made by the authors of school textbooks used in the process of teaching and learning a foreign language? In order to give answer to above questions, an oblong diagnostic examination of dictionaries and textbooks for teaching French language published in period 1973-2016 was carried out. The results of the research presented in the form of tabular summaries and qualitative analyzes showed ways of presenting the verb “to drink”, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages in materials for teaching French as a foreign language used in the Polish educational system.

Le choix du vocabulaire dans le processus d’enseignement et d’apprentissage des langues est l’un des problèmes clés de la didactique des langues. La compétence lexicale et son développement sont perçus comme une priorité par les enseignants et les étudiants. Quelle place occupe le champ sémantique de la consommation de boissons dans les manuels scolaires d’enseignement du français langue étrangère ? Quel est le choix du vocabulaire lié à ce cercle thématique effectué par les auteurs des manuels de FLE ? Pour répondre à ces questions, une recherche diagnostique de dictionnaires et de manuels de FLE publiés entre 1973 et 2016 a été réalisée. Les résultats de la recherche présentés sous forme de tableaux et d’analyses qualitatives ont montré des moyens de présenter le verbe ‘boire’, les boissons sans alcool et les boissons alcoolisées dans des manuels de français langue étrangère utilisés dans le système éducatif polonais.
