The practical part refers to an empirical study that was conducted among teachers of German in the area of Trójmiasto. The aim of the study was to investigate if and in which fields teachers of German practise the didactics of multilingualism using their knowledge of English, as well as their pupils’ command of this language.

This paper relates to the concept of didactics of multilingualism. Thedidactics of multilingualism is geared towards promoting the languageawareness of pupils and showing that knowing more languages makesthe learning process more efficient. This can be realized by comparinggrammar structures, comparing vocabulary, discussing sociocultural aspectsor taking advantage of the intercomprehension. The aspect of thenegative transfer should be also captured by showing the interferencefields and discussing the interference errors. The didactics of multilingualismshould be understood as a continuous process that begins with theacquisition of the mother tongue and goes further over the acquiring thefirst foreign language and the next foreign language. Following this, thedidactics of multilingualism should involve tasks for teachers of the Polishlanguage and teachers of the first, second and next foreign languages.

The current Polish tendencies to promote only English language in primary schools and various constraints in the „building of multilingualismfriendly environment” in early education call for an urgent action. To meet European appeals for multilingualism from an early age, two languages could be introduced in kindergartens and schools even in the present reality. This would require a new approch to teacher training, teacher co-operation, good administrative decisions, co-operation with parents, and integrated teaching. These statements will be illustrated by positive examples taken from the life of a kindergarten and a primary school in Toruń and Gdańsk, Poland.
