A complete account of the conservation measures carried out in the Białystok voivodeship during the years 1918-1939 is a difficult task because of the lack of preserved studies and incomplete archival documents. In the period 1918-1928, which can be called the first stage of conservation work, the predominant measures were towards the removal of war damages and preservation of salvaged objects. Besides this, the first conservation steps were undertaken (the parish church of St. Dorothy in Rosochate, the church in Wigry, the castle in Grodno, the Branicki palace in Białystok and others). An inventory of historical objects was also made. In the years 1928-1934 most of the conservation measures were still of a protective nature. This was because of the general economic situation of the country. Lack of financial means limited the work to conservation measures undertaken solely on the objects in danger of collapsing. It was only in 1 934 that the next stage in conservation work began (1934-1939) and a new perspective for improvement was opened in the conservation of historical objects. With the increase of the state budget, greater sums could be allotted for the conservation of historical objects. In the years 1918-1939, the conservation undertakings in the Białystok voivodeship were primarilly of a protective nature. This was because of the lack of financial means as well as of conservation traditions in this area, a shortage of specialized construction institutions, not to mention the meagre social interest. Nevertheless, in spite of these difficulties, several complex conservation undertakings were carried out of sacral and secular objects (the castle in Grodno, the parish church in Grodno, the churches in Wigry, Siemiatycze, the palace in Swiacko Wołłowiczowskie and Choroszcz). Part I has been published in ..Protection of Historical Monuments" 1 98 9 no 1
