The text refers to the phenomenon of the nineteenth-century exhibitions and considers them as a practice where important issues for modern visual and cognitive experience are accumulated. The basic category, through which the author tries to describe this phenomenon, is 'attention' in the sense that Jonathan Crary gives it. The exhibition is seen here as an insistent, though unsuccessful attempt to overcome the crisis of organising perception, finding its relationship in a number of literary genres and practices that gain popularity in the age of modernity – such as a travel guide and catalogue.

The review paper is devoted to Małgorzata Litwinowicz-Droździel’s „Zmiana, której nie było. Trzy próby czytania Reymonta” (“The Change That Was Not. Three Attempts at Reading Reymont”, 2019), a proposal of a new view on Władysław Stanisław Reymont’s three pieces composed in 1890s, namely “Pielgrzymka do Jasnej Góry” (“A Pilgrimage to Jasna Góra”), “Fermenty” (“Ferments”), and “Ziemia obiecana” (“The Promised Land”). Litwinowicz-Droździel sets the works in a broad cultural studies contexts and employs them to reflect on the modernising changes that took place in Poland towards the end of the 19th century. The reading model that she suggests depicts Reymont as a thoroughly modern writer and violates the accepted modes of interpreting his work.

Norwid and Baudelaire, born in the same year (1821), unconsciously put themselves in a specific position which Paul Valéry described as a ‘situation’. Its fundamental basis is poets’ determination to define themselves against their great Romantic predecessors, stand out and finally, to release themselves from the constraints of the Romantic influence. The position the two poets find themselves in defines their attitude to Romanticism which is based on carrying on and breaking up with the Romantic tradition and this, on the other hand, makes a time mark even more difficult to establish. Their position is presented in the context of contemporary categories such as Romanticism, 19th-century culture model, generation, modernity, and crisis. Such perspective makes it possible to recognise a shared sense of unity in Norwid and Baudelaire’s literary outputs as well as in their reception styles despite the fact the poets are essentially beyond any comparison.

Taka perspektywa pozwala dostrzec wspólnotę twórczości i recepcji pisarzy zasadniczo nieporównywalnych.

This article shows the output of Paweł Hertz – a poet, translator, editor, publicist as an example of current today Polish literature from the 19th century viewed in both domestic context and on the background of well-known European literature. Arguments supporting the thesis are the fact that he showed the output of the 19th-century writers as a uniform entity without division into particular epochs (contemporary career of the 19th-century-ness), ahistorical understanding of esthetic categories (e.g. classicism) practising reading in anthropological categories (as experience), pointing at the emotional reaction between the reader and the work, activist understanding of culture, revalorization of literature of various circulations, exceeding strictly national categories in thinking about literature, signals of material feedback in humanist science, humanism. The mentioned elements of the project of reading Paweł Hertz indicate current character and raise the attractiveness of his writings.
