A national park is, on the one hand, the most valuable natural property under the highest form of protection, and on the other, a public good that must remain available as such. Hence the presence of man in national parks. The consequence of this presence is, inter alia, littering these areas, which often occurs despite the fact that the rules for making national parks available are strictly defined and controlled. A high level of ecological awareness of tourists was indicated as a factor that can cause a significant and permanent change in undesirable behavior leading to littering in national parks. The attention was paid to the great importance in shaping this awareness of all informal educational activities carried out by national parks.

Park narodowy to z jednej strony najcenniejsze dobro przyrodnicze objęte najwyższą formą ochrony, z drugiej zaś dobro publiczne, które jako takie musi pozostać dostępne. Stąd obecność człowieka w parkach narodowych. Konsekwencją tej obecności jest między innymi zaśmiecenie tych obszarów, które występuje często pomimo tego, że zasady udostępniania parków narodowych są ściśle określone i kontrolowane. Jako czynnik, który jest w stanie spowodować istotną i trwałą zmianę niepożądanych zachowań prowadzących do zaśmiecania parków narodowych, wskazano wysoki poziom świadomości ekologicznej turystów. Zwrócono uwagę na duże znaczenie w kształtowaniu tej świadomości wszelkich nieformalnych działań edukacyjnych realizowanych przez parki narodowe.
