The main goal of the EU cohesion policy is to reduce economic, social and territorial disparities within the European Union. The 27-Member-State EU still needs discussion about huge economic and social disparities among these countries and their regions. The article concentrates on the reasons underlying economic regional disparities (theoretical approach). Identifying the reasons of economic regional disparities is extremely important for determining priorities of the EU cohesion policy as well as for the proper administering of public spending within the programmes of European cohesion policy.
